George Strait And Friends Raise An Extraordinary Amount For Texas Flood Relief Efforts
In the aftermath of the catastrophic Texas flood, George Strait quickly stepped up to help his home state. “The King of Country” organized a star-studded benefit concert to fund relief efforts.
Called Strait to the Heart, Strait hosted the event with his Vaqueros del Mar partner of 15 years, Tom Cusick. The intimate benefit concert occurred on Sunday, July 27, at the Estancia at Thunder Valley in Boerne, Texas.
Performers included Riley Green, Jamey Johnson, Wade Bowen, Randy Houser, and more. Strait performed during the event as well, singing his classic hits such as “Amarillo by Morning,” “Troubador,” and “The Chair.”
Strait also sang “Give It Away” with Johnson (who co-wrote the track) and “Here for a Good Time” with his son, Bubba Strait, and his longtime collaborator, Dean Dillon.

Because of the venue’s size, only 1,200 people could attend. Tickets and tables started at $1,000, while local first responders received complimentary tickets. The concert sold out mere days after it was announced.
According to a press release, all proceeds from the concert and all contributions made online will go to the 501(c)(3) Vaqueros del Mar Texas Flood Relief Fund. Then, the funds will be distributed directly to affected families and established recovery efforts.
The press release states that George Strait’s concert raised $6.25 million, and counting, for Texas flood relief.
Garth Brooks Makes Surprise Appearance During George’s Concert
Plus, a special guest made a surprise appearance during Strait’s benefit show. That guest was none other than Garth Brooks.
Brooks sang “The Fireman” with Strait, and they performed in honor of the first responders in the audience.
In addition to singing that duet, Brooks also performed a short solo set. He shared some of his signature songs, including “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old),” which the crowd loved.
Attendee Jennifer Page Gomez shared photos and videos from the concert on Facebook, including the one above of Brooks singing “Much Too Young.” Writing about her experience at the show, Gomez said:
“It felt so good to be able to actively do something to support the hill country flood victims (and have a great evening out as well). The event organizers had so many good surprises because so many people wanted to help: George Strait was, of course, amazing [Pastor] Max Lucado came out and gave an incredibly inspiring and encouraging message. It was such a treat to hear him as he is one of my all time favorite Christian authors. Garth Brooks came out to show support and sang a few of his hits. He’s absolutely amazing.”
