Hayden Panettiere Dies At 36
Actress and singer Hayden Panettiere died on August 16, 2026 at just 36 years old. Her father, Skip, shared the devastating news in a statement to ABC News:
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” the statement read. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Best known for her her roles in Nashville, Remember the Titans, Bring It On, and Raising Helen, Hayden began acting as a very young girl. In recent years, she had been extremely vocal about her struggles that have gravely impacted her life.
For years, Hayden struggled with what she described as a “horrible cycle” of depression and anxiety while trying to keep up with the demands of her career and a busy filming schedule. She later turned to substance abuse as a way of coping, and said an abusive relationship only deepened her struggles, leaving her trapped in what she described as a destructive “hamster wheel.”
Hayden Panettiere Shines As Juliette On Nashville
In her role on Nashville, Hayden played Juliette, a talented and ambitious country-pop singer who rises to fame while navigating the challenges that come with life in the spotlight. Throughout the series, her character faced many career struggles, complicated relationships, motherhood, addiction and recovery, and other personal challenges.
Nashville premiered in 2012 and ran for six seasons, with Hayden appearing throughout the series. Her character’s storyline frequently intersected with Connie Britton’s Rayna Jaymes, creating one of the show’s most memorable relationships.
Charles Esten, who played Deacon Claybourne on the show, shared a special bond with Hayden both on and off screen. The two actors shared many emotional and vulnerable scenes throughout the series.

Charles Esten Remembers His Dear Friend Hayden
On Saturday (August 22), Charles performed at the iconic Grand Ole Opry. Esten also shared a touching story about the first time he met Hayden during their respective auditions for Nashville.
He recalled that he didn’t realize she had been listening behind a door nearby. According to Esten, she knew almost immediately that he was the right person for the role of Deacon Claybourne.
“When I walked out of my ‘Nashville’ audition, my very first audition, I had done two scenes, and I played two songs. And I opened the door to go out of my audition, and bumped into somebody kinda hard. I went out there, and it was Hayden Panettiere, had been listening at the door just like Juliette Barnes would listen to me. And when I came out, she was like, ‘Oh my god, you were so good. You were so great,’” he shared.
Of course, both actors ultimately landed their roles. Charles later learned that Hayden had walked into the room right after his audition and told everyone they were “crazy” if they didn’t hire him.
The actor said the story was a perfect reflection of who Hayden was, describing her as a kind and selfless person who wasn’t afraid to speak up for someone she believed in.
“She did that for me, and that’s how she was. The very first scene I ever had with her was right here in the Grand Ole Opry in the hallway right behind us here. And that’s why I want to play this song for my dear friend who I’m gonna miss so much,” Charles said before he began his performance.
