Charles Kelley is opening up about his fight against cancer.

45-year-old Kelley is a member of the country music trio Lady A. On September 29, he told his fans that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma.

Kelley expressed his hope that he could keep working and singing. “I think physically I will feel like myself…I wanna keep working…this is where I belong…” he said at the time.

However, in a new update he shared on his Instagram Story, Kelley said that the treatments have been a bit worse than he expected. Because Instagram Stories expire after 24 hours, the video is no longer on Kelley’s account, but PEOPLE transcribed most of what he said.

Kelley started by sharing the “good” part, saying that he can tell his treatments are working. “…but I will say I naively thought I would not be in so much pain,” he remarked.

He said the treatments have made his body ache pretty bad, describing his symptoms as such:

“It’s kind of constantly achey and really tired, but I do have my good days and my bad days. It’s a trip, man. It’s a trip. But we’re getting through it…I’m hoping that as the chemo gets in there and fights off these cancer cells, that my bones and everything will actually feel a lot better over the next few weeks. But it ain’t no joke, man. It’s real.”

His wife, Cassie Kelley, also spoke about his treatments on her own Instagram Story. PEOPLE quotes her as saying:

“When people ask, ‘How are you doing?’ Honestly, the answer’s not great. We are not doing great over here,” she said.

She continued to say, “Today was not great but tomorrow is treatment four and I will find things to be grateful for tomorrow for sure.”

Charles Kelley Is Battling Multiple Myeloma – What Type Of Cancer Is It?

As mentioned above, Charles Kelley was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Multiple Myeloma forms in the plasma cells. The cancerous cells will start to accumulate in the bone marrow, which can cause bone pain or weakness.

Other symptoms of Multiple Myeloma include tiredness, frequent infections, and shortness of breath. Additionally, the cancer can cause an elevated level of calcium in the blood, which produces a different set of symptoms. Such symptoms include nausea, increased thirst, and confusion.

The Mayo Clinic states that treatment for Multiple Myeloma can help control the cancer, reduce further complications, and alleviate some of the symptoms.

We wish Charles Kelley the best as he continues his treatments, and we’ll be keeping him in our prayers…
