Lainey Wilson’s “Watermelon Moonshine” is the #1 Song on the Billboard Country Chart This Week

Lainey Wilson is proving she is a force to be reckoned with, from being named the Female Artist of the Year at the first-ever Peoples Choice Country Awards to earning more CMA Award nominations than any other artist two years in a row (2022 and 2023). 

Her latest single “Watermelon Moonshine” has quickly become a fan favorite, and this week has earned the #1 spot on the Billboard Country Airplay Chart. This is Wilson’s fifth song to successfully rise to the top of the charts.

“Watermelon Moonshine” Will Remind You of Another Famous Country Song

Lainey Wilson co-wrote “Watermelon Moonshine” with Josh Kear and Jordan Schmidt. The reminiscent song describes a young couple navigating the uncertainties of a first-time love and sharing a jar of sweet moonshine to help ease their nerves. 

“During this busy season of life that I’m in, I want to write about things that make me feel grounded,” Wilson told American Songwriter. “You can’t help but listen to ‘Watermelon Moonshine’ and think about that one person you were madly in love with.”

Many have compared the song to Deana Carter‘s 1996 hit “Strawberry Wine,” as they both evoke nostalgia and the feelings of young love. 

​​ “There will never be another ‘Strawberry Wine,’ but this could be the modern take on it,” Wilson reflected.

“Watermelon Moonshine” Was Featured on Hit TV show Yellowstone

Many months before “Watermelon Moonshine” was released as a single to Country Radio, fans of the TV series Yellowstone were introduced to the song in late 2022 when Lainey Wilson performed on Season 5 of the series. 

Abby, played by Wilson herself, sang the ballad during the Yellowstone Ranch’s branding season celebration. The romantic tune sets the scene for characters Abby and Ryan’s blossoming relationship.

Wilson dropped the music video for “Watermelon Moonshine” earlier this summer. Upon its release, she said: 

“Watermelon Moonshine is all about that young, wild, and crazy love. It’s the love that makes you feel like you’ve got somethin really special that can’t ever be taken away.”
