on

Little House on the Prairie is back with a brand-new reboot, but how does it compare to the original series?
It’s been more than three decades since the original Little House on the Prairie series aired.
The show, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s famous books about her childhood, aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983. Millions of fans tuned in throughout its run, and it’s still considered a classic that many love today.
So, when Netflix announced in early 2025 that a new adaptation was in the works, there was a lot of excitement about seeing the Ingalls family once again.
The first season of the new series premiered on Thursday, July 9, with all eight episodes available to watch at once. The season is based on the third Little House book, which follows the Ingalls as they move to the rural town of Independence, Kansas, to start a new life.
It’s a familiar story, but with any reboot, there are always some major differences from the original. One of the biggest changes is the new casting.
Before its release, Netflix confirmed that the new actors in the show would be: Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls, and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls.
For longtime viewers, seeing the new actors may take some getting used to. But how well did Netflix do with the recasting?
Keep scrolling to see a comparison of the original cast vs. the actors bringing those characters to life in 2026.
1. Laura Ingalls – Melissa Gilbert (Then), Alice Halsey (Now)

Melissa Gilbert portrayed Laura Ingalls throughout the original series, and now, Alice Halsey is stepping into the role of the show’s central character and narrator. At just 11 years old, Halsey has acted in major productions like Lessons in Chemistry and Days of our Lives.
In a cast guide shared by Netflix, Laura’s character is described as “observant, tender, strong-willed, and hot-tempered. She resists the bounds of ladylike behavior.”
2. Charles “Pa” Ingalls – Michael Landon (Then), Luke Bracey (Now)

Michael Landon became one of television’s most iconic fathers with his role as Charles “Pa” Ingalls. He was also heavily behind the scenes, acting as an executive producer, writer, and director of the original series.
Now Luke Bracey is taking his shot at it. You may recognize Bracey from some of his past work, such as Point Break (2015), Holidate (2020), and Elvis (2022).
3. Caroline “Ma” Ingalls – Karen Grassle (Then), Crosby Fitzgerald (Now)

Karen Grassle played Caroline “Ma” Ingalls throughout the original series and became a beloved TV mom. In the new reboot, Caroline Fitzgerald takes on the role.
While this is her biggest acting gig yet, some viewers may recognize her from Palm Royale, where she played Sylvia.
4. Mary Ingalls – Melissa Sue Anderson (Then), Skywalker Hughes (Now)

Melissa Sue Anderson played the older sister, Mary, whose personality couldn’t have been more different from Laura’s.
Skywalker Hughes will take on the responsibilities as a big sister in the new series. Although she’s only 14 years old, she’s already appeared in several well-known projects, like the western Joe Pickett for two seasons and the 2024 film Ordinary Angels.
The new Little House on the Prairie is now available for streaming only on Netflix. The show has already been renewed for a second season.
