Marshals Marks The Next Chapter For Kayce Dutton

Fans have been loving the latest Yellowstone spin-off since its March 1 debut. Centered entirely on Kayce Dutton, Marshals follows John Dutton’s son as he embarks on a new path by joining a specialized team of U.S. Marshals.

A major bombshell was revealed immediately – as Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, has tragically died from cancer. The episode later reveals that the illness may have been related to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation. We learn that this loss has deeply affected Kayce in a profound way as he admits to how her death has gravely impacted his life.

He agrees to join the Marshals team, giving him a renewed sense of purpose. Kayce later visits Monica’s memorial, promising his late wife that he will begin to try again.

Luke Grimes Returns To Play Kayce Dutton

Actor Luke Grimes returned to the role as Kayce as well as Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham). The spin-off also welcomed a new cast-member, Logan Marshall-Green, who will play Pete “Cal” Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.

Earlier this season, country fans tuned in to watch country singer Riley Green as he made his big acting debut! Riley plays a troubled cowboy named Garrett.

This is Riley’s first acting role, and it’s a pretty big one to land without prior experience. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet of the show’s premiere, the singer shared that he was introduced to the opportunity by Luke.

The two are friends in real life and have even worked together before, since Luke is also a country singer. When Riley mentioned his interest in acting, Luke helped connect him with an audition, and from there, everything moved fast.

Episode 11 Recap, “On Thin Ice”

On Sunday (May 10), episode 11 of Marshals aired. The episode follows Kayce and Cal as they become stranded in the mountains during a dangerous snowstorm while tracking one of the escaped fugitives, Neil. Tensions rise after Neil hints that he knows damaging secrets about the Dutton family, including details connected to the infamous “train station.”

As the trio struggles to survive freezing conditions, flashbacks reveal the truth about a failed military mission involving Kayce, Cal, Garrett, and Roner. The episode confirms that Roner was left behind during combat after Cal ordered the team to retreat, a decision that fractured the group for years.

Meanwhile, Belle (Arielle Kebbel) and Andrea (Ash Santos) struggle to make contact with either Kayce or Cal as the dangerous storm intensifies in the mountains. Belle fears the two marshals may be stranded without backup in life-threatening conditions, while Andrea remains focused on Garrett’s critical condition after he was seriously injured in the fire. Despite growing concerns and the late hour, the pair continue searching for Neil, believing the fugitive is still at large.

The emotional revelations continue when Cal finally admits that Garrett had lied about Roner’s death in order to escape the battlefield. Cal chose to carry the blame himself to protect Garrett, believing the guilt would destroy him.

Kayce steps outside the cabin and is hit with another flashback to his days as a Navy SEAL, recalling the moment his team came under heavy enemy fire during a mission. The memory shows the unit splitting into two groups to gain higher ground and a tactical advantage before Kayce snaps back to the present and returns inside carrying firewood.

Kayce Dutton Uncovers Secrets From His Past

Inside the cabin, tensions continue to rise as Cal blames Kayce for the dangerous situation they are now trapped in. Kayce attempts to calm him by revealing that Garrett survived surgery and asked him to tell Cal he was sorry. The apology does little to soften Cal’s anger, and he storms back outside to gather more kindling for the fire.

The situation turns critical when Cal unknowingly walks onto a frozen lake and crashes through the ice. Barely managing to pull himself from the freezing water, he stumbles back to the cabin suffering from severe cold exposure. Kayce immediately strips off Cal’s soaked clothing and orders Neil to surrender his thermal shirt to help keep Cal alive.

As Neil removes his shirt, Cal notices he has the same tattoo as Kayce. He is shocked to possibly find a detail that hints at a deeper connection between the fugitive and Kayce’s military past.

Riley Green’s Character Meets His Fate

Perhaps the most tragic scene from the episode involves Riley Green’s character, Garrett. When Kayce, Cal, and Andrea finally return to the hospital after the confrontation with Neil on the mountain, they’re met with devastating news about Garrett’s condition.

His doctor explains that the injuries he suffered in the fire caused severe complications, preventing his body from getting enough oxygen and placing overwhelming strain on his heart. Despite surviving surgery earlier in the episode, Garrett died while the team was still stranded in the storm.

The loss hits all three hard, especially Andrea, whose relationship with Garrett had only recently begun to deepen. Kayce and Cal quietly process the death of another former SEAL teammate, adding even more emotional weight to the episode’s ongoing exploration of guilt, sacrifice, and survival.

As they leave the hospital room, Kayce repeats the haunting line, “The best of us don’t come home,” reflecting on the tragedy surrounding their military brotherhood.
