4 Newly Released Photos Of Dolly Parton & Carl Dean Show A Side Of Their Marriage Fans Never Saw

Never-before-seen photos of Dolly Parton and Carl Dean give a glimpse into their private love story.
It’s no secret that Dolly’s husband wasn’t interested in stardom like his wife. Carl stayed completely out of the spotlight, and even though they were married for nearly 60 years, very few photos of him were ever shared publicly.
But now, four never-before-seen photos of Dolly with her mystery man have been released. The pictures are part of a black-and-white photo strip taken more than five decades ago.
In an interview with Vogue, Dolly’s niece Rebecca Seaver shared a first look at the snapshots, which will be included in the archive at the singer’s new Life of Many Colors Museum.
The museum will be located on the third floor of Dolly’s SongTeller Hotel in Nashville. It will give fans a closer look at her legendary career and life, along with mementos from her and Carl’s incredible love story.
Seaver told the outlet that she came across the photos years ago while going through her aunt’s closet to find items for the archive. While sorting through Dolly’s belongings, she found a military trunk that Carl had used when he was in the National Guard.
She didn’t open it right away, but in 2024, her archive manager went through the trunk and discovered some hidden treasures inside. In it was Dolly’s wedding dress (also displayed at the Life of Many Colors Museum), along with several photos.
“So when we found Carl’s trunk, or the “time capsule,” as we call it, there were lots of pictures in there,” Seaver said. “One of them is a photo strip that no one’s ever seen before. Dolly had not even seen it since it was taken, so she was absolutely floored when we found it.”
The four photos show Dolly and Carl making silly faces while she holds her husband’s face. It’s such an adorable moment between them, and it’s special for Dolly’s fans to get a glimpse of this side of their relationship.
“It’s just a perfect example of their relationship,” Seaver continued. “People haven’t seen many photos of Carl, and they don’t really know much about him other than what [Dolly’s] said over the years, so I think to see this really goofy side of him, and how happy she looks—her smile has never been brighter than it is in this photo—is so sweet.”

Dolly Parton and Carl Dean first met in 1964 at the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville. It was Dolly’s very first day in the city.
They were married for 59 years before Carl passed away in March 2025. Dolly died on August 25, 2026.
