Hours after a Delta jet came to a stop upside down on the runway following a crash landing, video of the incident has been released.

Just after 2:30 p.m. local time, Delta flight #4819 arrived in Toronto from Minneapolis. Upon approaching the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport, the Bombardier CRJ-900LR suffered an incident that caused it to make a hard landing that flipped the aircraft on its top.

No official cause of the crash has been released, but newly released video footage is leading to speculation that the plane was hit by a sudden gust of wind as it neared the ground.

Meteorologist Brad Nitz reported that Toronto had received 8 inches of snow over the weekend but that it wasn’t snowing at the time of the crash. However, strong winds were blowing, with gusts of up to 40 mph being reported.

Passenger John Nelson confirmed to CNN that there were high winds when the plane came in for a landing and snow had blown over the runway.

“Coming in, it was routine but it was noticeable that the runways were kind of in a weird condition,” Nelson said. “When we hit it was just super hard … we hit the ground and the plane went sideways. I believe we skidded on our side then flipped onto our back where we ended up. There was a big fireball out the left side of the plane.”

Nelson said that he and most of the passengers were suspended upside down when the plane came to a stop. After “letting themselves go” from their seatbelts, the passengers rushed to get out as the smell of jet fuel filled the cabin.

Slow-motion of the video obtained by TMZ late Monday showed the aircraft appearing to touch down hard before wobbling. Flames are seen near the back of the plane upon impact before it is surrounded by clouds of smoke, and possibly snow stirred up on the runway.

Another video captured by a pilot sitting on the runway in another aircraft was released Tuesday morning. The new clip gives a clearer view of the incident. The pilot can be heard saying, “No, no, no” as the plane lands hard and erupts in flames and a cloud of smoke.

STRONG LANGUAGE WARNING!

The pilot and crew are being hailed as heroes.

Prior to footage of the crash landing being released, experts praised the pilot’s ability to bring the plane to a stop without any loss of life. 18 passengers were injured, with three being transported to local hospitals.

Upon the video’s release, it became even more evident that a miracle had occurred on the Toronto airport tarmac on Monday afternoon.

Passengers released videos of their own taken as they evacuated the airplane. One flyer filmed herself strapped into her seat as the aircraft came to a rest upside down. Another clip showed her exiting the plane with the help of a flight attendant who was directing passengers to the emergency exits.

John Nelson, was among the first to share footage on social media. Nelson showed the upside-down plane just moments after he exited.

“We’re in Toronto. We just landed. Our plane crashed, it’s upside-down. Fire department is on site. It’s upside-down. Most people appear to be OK. We’re all getting off. So [that’s what’s] going on.”
