The music world is mourning the loss of the legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck.

On Wednesday (January 11), Beck’s team shared a statement announcing he passed away the previous day (January 10). The statement read:

“On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Known as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck’s influence expanded far beyond the rock scene. He had a profound impact on at least one country music artist…Keith Urban.

As a guitar player himself, Urban looked up to and admired Beck. So he was extremely “shocked and saddened” when he learned about his death.

Urban shared a tribute to Beck on social media, and wrote:

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Jeff Beck had ‘portaled into the next realm.’ It’s impossible to label or frame his gift, his music, his ART, or to try and quantify his impact on not only guitarists, but all kinds of musicians, singers, and music lovers all over the world.”

Urban got the chance to meet Beck and watch him play live in September 2022. He shared a picture he took with him and ZZ Top‘s Billy Gibbons that day:

“[Beck’s] absolutely one of the few faces on the Mt. Rushmore of guitar players, and I am SO grateful to my friend Scott Bradoka for inviting me to come see Jeff play last September,” Urban said. “We stood side stage with Billy Gibbons watching Jeff cast the spell that only he could – with nothing more than a Strat, some pedals, a couple of amps, and his ‘otherworldly talent.’”

Urban ended his tribute by saying, “God bless you Jeff. Thank you for your light. RIP brother.”
