Not every artist who auditions for The Voice gets the coaches to turn their chairs. But even in those instances, the coaches offer the hopeful singer some advice to help them refine their talent.
20-year-old Gillian Smith aimed to wow the coaches of Season 24 by performing a huge hit from Lainey Wilson, “Heart Like a Truck.” Wilson released “Heart Like a Truck” in May 2022 as the lead single off of her album Bell Bottom Country.
“Heart Like a Truck” reached the #2 spot on the Country Airplay chart and the #7 position on the Hot Country Songs chart. It also claimed the #29 slot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. The song has been nominated for both Single and Song of the Year at the upcoming CMA Awards.
“Heart Like a Truck” is a powerful song, and therefore difficult to sing. Smith hoped to showcase her own vocal power when she covered it on The Voice.
However, none of the coaches turned their chairs for her performance. When explaining why, they chalked it up to some issues with pitch and control.
Niall Horan said:
“That’s a huge song, there’s a lot of big notes in it, and if you miss one of those big ones it just kind of takes it away from the performance. And I feel like if you connected to the lyrics just a little bit more, pitch is not as much of an issue. But there’s an amazing voice in there with so much power.”
Reba McEntire had similar things to say. She told Smith:
“I enjoyed your performance, but I agree, you did have some pitch problems. Sometimes when you don’t get enough air in your diaphragm to help push that out, it just kind of goes different directions sometimes. I know I’ve had that myself. If you can work on that and come back to see us, that would be wonderful, because you are a beautiful young lady, and you’ve got a great talent.”
Gwen Stefani also left Smith with some encouraging words, saying, “Just keep moving forward.”
