Roy Cooper’s Rodeo Legacy Lives On
ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper tragically lost his life in a house fire in Decatur, Texas on April 29th, 2025. He was 69 years old.
Roy was affectionately known as the “Super Looper” and was one of only 10 cowboys in history to achieve a rare Triple Crown honor by winning three world titles in one year.
The Cooper family has close ties to the country music community. Roy and legendary musician George Strait were close friends for more than 40 years. George gave an emotional speech at the memorial service and said:
“Roy was one of my very best friends, I can count those on one hand. He was my hero.“
Tuf Cooper, Roy’s youngest son, is following in his father’s footsteps and making a name for himself in the rodeo circuit. The 35-year-old is a 4x World Champion and a 16x NFR qualifier in roping.
Tuf took a brief hiatus from competing after the sudden death of his father, but says it was never a question that he would continue roping. He told ProRodeo.com:
“He would want me to (be out there), any day of the week. He would want me there doing my job because – what did he say? – never pass up an opportunity to make a memory.”
Tuf Cooper Places First At The Music City Rodeo
Exactly one month after his father’s passing, Tuf returned to the arena for the first-ever Music City Rodeo on May 29th. He rode his newest horse, Hammer, for the inaugural event in Nashville.
The Cooper family was in attendance to support him for what surely was an emotional moment and he honored his father’s legacy.
Tuf and Hammer executed an impressive 7.2-second run for tie-down roping, earning the first-place spot in the event. Behind him were Joel Harris and Andrew Burks with 7.4 and 7.6 seconds, respectively.
Afterwards, Tuf reflected:
“Every day, the PRCA provides an opportunity to rope and win, and that desire, that passion, is growing more and more every day since the passing of my father. (This win), it feels like I made my dad proud.”
