Two Firefighters Killed, Another Injured, In Shooting In Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
The state of Idaho and the entire nation has expressed shock over the death of two firefighters killed in a shooting in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday (June 29). As KHQ News out of nearby Spokane reports, the incident started around 1:20 PM local time when someone reported a brush fire.
Firefighters responded to the scene, but what they believed to be a regular call quickly turned into a tragedy. Around 2 PM, firefighters reported that they had been shot at.
Two firefighters lost their lives in the shooting, while another sustained serious injuries. KHQ reports the third firefighter underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris described the shooting as “a total ambush.” He added, “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
Over 300 law enforcement officers responded to the area of the shooting and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order to protect those in the area at the time.
Body Of Suspected Shooter Found On Canfield Mountain
KHQ reports that law enforcement officers detected cell phone activation in the area. Following that detection, officers discovered the body of the suspected gunman on Canfield Mountain. A firearm was located next to the man.
His cause and manner of death have not been released.
“We had a cell phone activation that was in the same spot since about 3:16 [PM], and that it was in the same area,” Sherriff Norris said during a news conference. “And we honed in on that cellphone, and we saw that there was a male, appeared to be deceased, with a weapon nearby.”
Officers believe the suspect was the lone shooter and that there is no lingering threat. A motive for the shooting has not been determined.
On Monday (June 30), The Associated Press reported that an anonymous law enforcement official had identified the suspect as 20-year-old Wess Roley.
The brush fire remains active and burned approximately 20 acres when KHQ published the report cited earlier in this article. Since the fire remains ongoing, residents should remain prepared in case the blaze grows.
One of the firefighters killed in the shooting worked for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department in Idaho. The other firefighter worked for Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the firefighters’ families…
This is a developing story.
