The Kentucky Derby Celebrates Its 152nd Year

On Saturday, May 2nd, tens of thousands donned their best dresses, suits, and hats and gathered at Churchill Downs for the 152nd Kentucky Derby.

The Kentucky Derby is more than just a race – it is a cultural event. Beginning in 1875, it is the longest continuously running sport in the United States. The one-and-a-quarter-mile race lasts approximately 2 minutes and is often referred to as “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”

Despite how quickly the actual race unfolds, the annual event is surrounded by tradition, pageantry, and live performances. It draws approximately 150,000 attendees each year and is broadcast live for millions.

The National Anthem, performed live at the Kentucky Derby just before the race, is a highlight of the gathering. For most of the last decade, talented women in country music have been invited to do the honors. Past performers include Wynonna Judd (2024), Carly Pearce (2023), and Brittany Spencer (2022), among others.

The Derby has strong ties to Southern roots, aligned with its Kentucky heritage. This year, the Florida-based blues and rock group, Tedeschi Trucks Band, performed the anthem, a slight change of course compared to recent years.

Led by married couple Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, the group recently released their sixth studio album, Future Soul, and kicked off a North American tour.

Ahead of the big day, Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack, shared:

“Tedeschi Trucks Band’s soulful sound and remarkable vocal presence make them an exciting addition to this year’s Kentucky Derby. We’re thrilled to welcome them to Churchill Downs and know their performance will capture the energy, emotion, and spirit that define Derby Day.”

Accompanied by just an electric guitar, the duo gave a bluesy twist on “The Star Spangled Banner” while still maintaining the spirit of the original. Guests stood at attention and honored the flag while the anthem echoed through the historic venue.
