As we approached a new millennium, traditional country roots, blended with modern mainstream appeal, brought country music to a wider audience. Albums sold millions of copies, fans filled arenas and stadiums, and country radio listenership experienced an all-time high.

Now, 30 years later, many 90s country hits have stood the test of time and remain nostalgic staples on country radio, streaming playlists, and at concerts to this day.

“Little Bitty” – Alan Jackson

“It’s alright to be __________ , a little hometown or a __________ .”

Alan Jackson‘s “Little Bitty” was released in October 1996 as the lead-off single from his fifth studio album, Everything I Love. The song went number one on the U.S. Billboard country music charts just two months after its release, becoming Jackson’s fourteenth career number-one hit.

The song was written by Tom T. Hall, who earned a nickname in the industry as “The Storyteller.” Even though he largely retired from writing in the 1980s, penning this future classic for Alan Jackson proved to be worthwhile.

“My Maria” – Brooks & Dunn

“She is the sunlight when the ____________ .”

Did you know that “My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn is actually a cover? The song was originally co-written and released by B.W. Stevenson in 1973.

Brooks & Dunn’s version was released in March 1996 on their album Borderline, via Arista Records. Billboard called it the #1 song of the year, and it won the pair a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Vocal Group or Duo.

The corresponding music video was directed by South African filmmaker Michael Oblowitz.

“Dust On The Bottle” – David Lee Murphy

“There might be a little __________ , but don’t let it fool ya about _________ .”

David Lee Murphy is the sole songwriter of “Dust on the Bottle,” which was released in August 1995. It topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart later that year, becoming the first of his career. It would remain his only #1 for the next 23 years.

In a 2010 interview, Murphy said the “song came out of nowhere” and that he wrote it in less than 15 minutes.

“Strawberry Wine” – Deana Carter

“Like strawberry wine, __________ , the hot July moon ____________ .”

Deana Carter created one of the most nostalgic songs in all of 90s country with “Strawberry Wine.” It was the debut single off her debut album, Did I Shave My Legs For This?

The song was written by Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison, and was released in July 1996. “Strawberry Wine” struck a chord with listeners and won Song of the Year at the 1997 CMA Awards. Additionally, it earned nominations at the Grammy Awards and the ACM Awards and became known as Carter’s signature song.

“Check Yes Or No” – George Strait

“Do you _________ , do you want to be my _______ ?”

George Strait‘s “Check Yes or No” was released in September 1995 as the lead single from his box set Strait Out of the Box. It was a commercial success, topping both the U.S. and Canadian country charts.

“Check Yes or No” was written by Danny Wells and Dana Hunt Black, and won Single of the Year at both the CMA and ACM Awards the following year. It remains one of Strait’s most-streamed songs across platforms today, a testament to the track’s timeless appeal.

“Any Man of Mine” – Shania Twain

“Any man of mine better ___________ .”

Shania Twain co-wrote “Any Man of Mine” with writer and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. It was released in May 1995 and, after crossing into the American market, became Twain’s first number-one hit on U.S. Country radio.

The song was highly celebrated, earning wins at the CCMAs and the Country Music Radio Awards, and two Grammy Award nominations.

The music video also produced one of Twain’s most iconic looks of the era, as she danced around in light-wash jeans and a denim vest.

“I Like It, I Love It” – Tim McGraw

“I like it, I love it, I want some _________ . I try so hard, I can’t ___________ .”

“I Like It, I Love It” was released by Tim McGraw in July 1995 as the first single from his third studio album, All I Want. It became his third number-one hit on the Hot Country Songs chart and has since been certified 2x platinum in the United States.

The song was written by Jeb Stuart Anderson, Steve Dukes, and Mark Hall, and was recorded at the acclaimed FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
