Wynonna Judd Gets Deeply Personal In New Song About Her Biological Father She Never Met

Wynonna Judd released her new song “Girl Who Could Sing” on Tuesday, August 25, and it’s one of the most personal tracks she has ever written.

The new song dives into the emotions Wynonna has carried about her biological father, Charles Jordan, whom she never had the chance to meet.

For most of her life, she believed she was the daughter of Michael Ciminella. He was the ex-husband of her mother, Naomi Judd, and her sister Ashley Judd’s biological father.

“I was 30 years old when I learned the truth, that the man I called “Dad” my entire life, was not my biological father. It changed everything I thought I knew about who I was,” Wynonna said in a press release.

It wasn’t until after Charles’ death that his family found newspaper clippings about Wynonna’s career in a desk drawer. The discovery left her with a lot of questions about the relationship they never got to have.

Unfortunately, Wynonna knows she won’t get the answers she’s been looking for.

She continued, “By the time I was ready to meet him, he was gone. I never got to hear his voice, look him in the eyes, or ask him why. I’ll carry those unanswered questions with me for the rest of my life.”

Instead of holding onto that heartbreak, Wynonna decided to take those unanswered questions and do what she knows best: turn them into a song.

“‘Was I ever really your daughter, or just a girl who could sing?’ is the question that hurts the most—because I’ll never get to hear his answer,” she added. ” What do you do with the questions you’ll never have answers to? My answer is simple… I sing about it.”

In the video Wynonna released to accompany the song, she is sitting in a living room that appears to have seen better days.

As a few lamps flicker around her, she looks through old photos, newspaper articles, and magazine covers that once belonged to her father.

A few of the song’s lyrics go as follows:

“Did you hear the same lines that kept us away?/Two worlds apart, 10 miles too far/Who I was to you still a mystery to me/Did my voice and my backbone come from you? Now the middleman’s gone/All the answers died with her, too/Did you ever buy a ticket? Did you come to a show?/It will plague my mind for a lifetime to never really know.”

“Girl Who Could Sing” will be featured on Wynonna’s upcoming album, The Hard Truth, which will be released on October 2. Her husband, Cactus Moser, produced the project.

A press release for the album reveals that the first half will focus on Wynonna’s “bittersweet relationship with her mother and the struggle to find herself, remaining locked outside a life of her own even in the spotlight.”

The second half will take a major turn by looking at the life she’s worked so hard to build.

“Being a part of this record and helping bring these songs to life as its producer, has been the most important work I’ve known,” Moser said. “We started with nothing but a feeling and emotion and ended up with an entire album that captures Wynonna’s story with a level of honesty she’s never experienced in her career. It’s the kind of record that makes a difference and reminds you why music exists in the first place.”
