Country Music’s Biggest Names Gather To Honor George Jones

Country music legend George Jones passed away on April 26, 2013 at the age of 81. To mark the ten-year anniversary of his death this year, some of country music’s biggest stars gathered to honor him during a special tribute concert.

The concert was called “Still Playin’ Possum” in reference to Jones’ famous “Possum” nickname. It was held on April 25 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

The production was executive produced by Jones’ widow, Nancy Jones. She was in attendance and watched the performances from the audience.

Wynonna Judd & Jamey Johnson Unite For An Unforgettable Tribute

A standout moment of the show was when Wynonna Judd and Jamey Johnson united onstage to sing “Golden Ring.” Jones released “Golden Ring” in 1976 with his former wife Tammy Wynette.

“Golden Ring” reached the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart following its release. It is still considered to be one of the greatest country duets of all time.

Before Judd and Johnson started singing, Judd addressed the crowd, saying, “It’s about to get country in here!” And country it was…

Judd and Johnson made a great team. Their voices meshed together perfectly as they moved through the oh-so-familiar lyrics of the chorus, singing:

“Golden ring, with one tiny little stone, waiting there, for someone to take it home, by itself. It’s just a cold metallic thing. Only love can make a golden wedding ring.”

The crowd cheered for Judd and Johnson multiple times throughout the performance. Everyone was loving what they heard from the duo.

They were having a great time too, as Judd made clear after they finished the song. She exclaimed, “I want to do it again!
