‘Yellowstone’ Star Teases Series’ “Very, Very Profound” Ending
on Sep 22, 2024
In less than two months, fans of Yellowstone will finally get to see the much-anticipated conclusion to the Dutton family drama.
After filming was delayed due to Hollywood strikes, and the question mark hovering over Kevin Costner’s return to the series, the cast, sans Costner, recently wrapped the final episodes of the beloved Paramount drama.
Costner, who portrayed the show’s lead character, Dutton family patriarch John Dutton, chose not to return for the second half of Season 5. Issues in his personal life and scheduling conflicts with his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, led 69-year-old to walk away from Yellowstone.
Season 5 Part 1 of Yellowstone aired in November of 2022 and showed Costner’s character, recently sworn in as Governor of Montana, at risk of impeachment. With the actor confirming that he wouldn’t be returning for Part 2, fans are curious about how the show’s writer, Taylor Sheridan, will deal with his character.
Other storylines left hanging at the end of Part 1 are the fates of Dutton’s children, Jamie, Kayce, and Beth, ranch foreman Rip Wheeler, and others. But one of the show’s stars recently shared that he thinks fans will be pleased with the ending.
Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, shared his reaction to the show’s conclusion with Entertainment Weekly.
“I couldn’t be happier. I think it’s a perfect ending for the show for every character. It’s just a testament to what a good writer Taylor is, and it’s a very, very profound, beautiful ending. I can’t wait to sit down and watch it one day.”
While the end of Yellowstone may seem abrupt to viewers, Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, shared that it was never intended for the show to go on past five seasons.
Reilly told EW that production delays and Kevin Costner’s exit were for the best as it caused the show to end the way it was originally intended to end.
“It was always going to be five seasons in [Taylor Sheridan’s] head, but because the show became so successful, the network and everyone wanted more,” Reilly said. “So, in a way, fate took it and we ended this part of Yellowstone in a way that he always envisioned it to end.”
She also said the cast knew how the show would end when committing to the project in 2018, though they weren’t told specific details.
“He told me the ending of the show when we were filming season 1,” Reilly said. Executive producer David Glasser confirmed Reilly’s statement, saying, “Day one, episode one, Taylor said, ‘I know exactly how this ends.'”
Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 will premiere on Paramount on November 10.
