The Story Behind “Colder Weather”
In 2010, the Zac Brown Band released a song that spoke straight to the hearts of country fans. Called “Colder Weather,” the track was released in 2010 off of the band’s album You Get What You Give.
Lead singer Zac Brown wrote the song along with the group’s keyboardist and guitarist Coy Bowles, as well as Wyatt Durrette and Levi Lowrey.
Their combined talents resulted in the emotional tune, which tells the story of a trucker who can’t go home to see the woman he loves because of bad weather. Despite the cold that surrounds him, the trucker remains hopeful that he’ll be able to see his love soon.
“Colder Weather” topped the country chart following its release and was also a crossover hit on the pop chart. Because of its popularity, the song has been covered by many others over the years.
But we bet you’ve never heard a cover quite like the one we’re about to share with you.
Home Free’s History With The Song
When it came time to release their Christmas album, Full of (Even More) Cheer, country a cappella group Home Free decided to include a cover of “Colder Weather” in the mix.
This wasn’t the first time Home Free performed the song. In fact, they stunned thousands when they covered the track when they competed on the fourth season of The Sing-Off.
The group won the competition the following week. They’ve been winning us over with their cover performances ever since.
A New Version & Video
After singing “Colder Weather” for so many years, Home Free told their fans on Facebook they felt it “absolutely deserved the full studio and full video treatment.”
They debuted the video for “Colder Weather” on November 15, 2016. It’s just as beautiful as you’d expect.
The video opens with the five members huddled near the fire. They switch up the setting in the middle of the video, when they can be seen standing in the middle of a country road. These simple settings draw viewers in to the group’s vocal performance, which was spectacular as always.
Words can’t even begin to describe how stunning their harmonies sound on this track. So we’ll let you hear for yourself by watching the video above.
No matter what time of year it is, you can’t help but appreciate the beauty that can be found in Home Free’s other tracks from Full of (Even More) Cheer. Enjoy one of our other favorite songs from the album below.
