And this year’s ACM Award for Single of the Year went to…Luke Combs!
Combs released his cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” on his 2023 album Gettin’ Old after years of playing the song at live shows. In July 2023, “Fast Car” hit number one on the Country Airplay chart, making Chapman the first solo Black woman songwriter to reach the top of that chart. It also hit number one on the Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at number two on the all-genre Billboard 100.
In November 2023, Chapman became the first Black woman to win a CMA Award, where she took home Song of the Year (which goes to the songwriter). She also became the first Black songwriter to win the award. Combs took home both Single of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards.
In response to the success of Combs’ version of her song, Chapman said, “I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there. I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced ‘Fast Car.'”
Chapman and Combs joined forces at the 2024 Grammys to perform “Fast Car” as a duet for the first time.
