It was announced in 2015 that Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson recorded an album together titled Django and Jimmie. It dropped in June of that year and turned out to be Haggard’s last work before passing away on his 79th birthday in 2016.
Thankfully, they took us behind the scenes while they were recording the track “Missing Ol’ Johnny Cash” together.
Haggard had the idea for this song and ran it by Nelson, who thought it was a great idea. They wanted to put a song together about some things Johnny Cash did, so Haggard put lyrics and an arrangement together and they started recording.
We find out right away in this clip that Haggard and Cash’s history goes back further than one might think. The “Fightin’ Side Of Me” singer was actually an inmate at one of Cash’s San Quentin prison shows.
It is so amazing to see how many people and how much time and effort go into putting a single track together.
