John Michael Montgomery Remembers Lost Loved Ones With “I Miss You A Little”

In 1994, John Michael Montgomery was at the height of his career with hits like “Life’s a Dance” and “I Swear.” But, in the midst of his success, he was hit with a personal tragedy when his father passed away.

After the loss of his father, Montgomery felt a lot of pressure to write a song to honor him, but the timing wasn’t right until two years later when he co-wrote “I Miss You A Little” for his fourth studio album, What I Do Best.

“I was able to sit down after a couple of years of thinking and wondering and accepting the fact that my father — the person who was probably the most special person in my life growing up, along with my mom — all of a sudden he’s taken away from me,” Montgomery said in a 1997 interview.

“I had a lot of people on me because they couldn’t believe I didn’t write a song and put it on my self-titled album. But it was just too soon. There were too many mixed emotions that I had to finally put in one place and deal with. And you know, that’s how (`I Miss You A Little’) came about. I found myself mad, hurt. Anybody who’s ever lost a parent, you go through all kinds of questions in your mind. But the bottom line was I just really missed having him around…. And that’s what this song was about.”

“I Miss You A Little” failed to top the charts, but remains one of John Michael Montgomery’s most beloved songs as it speaks to anyone who has ever lost someone they loved.

I Miss You A Little
John Michael Montgomery, Mike Anthony, Richard William Fagan

Sometimes a song can touch a nerve
That takes me back to you
When I pick up my old guitar
And I play your favorite tune

Every now and then, some little thing
I’ve buried comes bubblin’ up
And once in a while, you feel close enough to touch

I miss you a little since you’ve been gone
A few little memories keep hangin’ on
I miss you a little, I guess you could say
A little too much, a little too often
A little more every day

When I go by our old house
I pretend that you’re still there
Waitin’ for me on the porch
But there’s just an empty chair

Wish I could see you just one more time
Before I drive away
So I could stop and go inside, and say

I miss you a little since you’ve been gone
A few little memories keep hangin’ on
I miss you a little, I guess you could say
A little too much, a little too often

A little more every day
A little too much, a little too often
A little more every day
