Hours after announcing that Dolly Parton had died, her team revealed her cause of death.
In a statement released to PEOPLE, Dolly’s reps shared that she died after a brief battle with cancer. No further details were revealed, and the type of cancer was not disclosed.
The statement also indicated that Dolly “departed her Earthly life” surrounded by loved ones at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand,” the statement says.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact. After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, surrounded by loved ones.”
The outlet reports that the “Jolene” singer was admitted to the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on Friday, August 21, and passed away there four days later.
Dolly’s family announced her death on Tuesday afternoon.
News of Dolly Parton’s death was announced in a video message from her nephew, Bryan Seaver. Seaver, the son of Dolly’s sister Cassie, spoke on behalf of the family, saying:
“I am representing the Parton and Owens family today, announcing the passing of my aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean,” Seaver, who served as head of his aunt’s security said.
“I have imagined the heaviness of this moment, but haven’t truly felt it until now. It is an honor. An honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.”
Bryan said that she is “in the arms of Jesus” and was “surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her, and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”
