Dolly Parton’s Final Album Was Unlike Anything She’d Done Before

Dolly Parton’s final album was a special project that brought her family together.
On Tuesday, August 25, country music legend Dolly Parton died at 80 years old. It was later shared that she had a brief battle with cancer.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, confirmed the news of her passing in a video message shared on his aunt’s social media. He has served as her head of security for over two decades.
Over her 60-year career, Dolly wrote more than 3,000 songs and recorded over 1,000 of them. She released 50 albums, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and had 25 songs reach No.1 on the country charts, a record for a female country artist.
But one of the moments Dolly was most proud of came when she released what would become the final album of her lifetime.
In November 2024, she dropped Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith and Fables. The project was a collaborative album between her and extended family members.
An album like this from the “I Will Always Love You” singer seemed like a long time coming, considering she was born into a very musical family.
Growing up, Dolly, her parents, and her 11 brothers and sisters would come together to sing at home, at church, and even at local events across East Tennessee.
Dolly Once Said That Her Last Album Was Her Favorite
The album includes 37 songs, all hand-picked by Dolly herself. Some feature new recordings she made with family members, while others came straight from her archives. Those older recordings were done many years ago with family who are no longer alive.
The album features people close to Dolly, like her mother, Avie Lee, her grandfather, Reverend Jake Owens, her siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In a 2024 interview with the Associated Press, Dolly said that this collection of songs is her favorite out of the many she’s created.
“I would imagine this will be my favorite album,” Dolly said. “This really involves, you know, my grandmas and my grandpas, my uncles and my aunts and all the people going all the way back that had the biggest influence on my life. The ones that I remember from being little, and it even goes on farther back from there.”
Dolly Parton Will Be Laid To Rest During A Private Ceremony In Tennessee
A few hours after her passing, Dolly’s team shared details on her funeral arrangements. She requested that she’d be celebrated during a private ceremony, with only family in attendance.
At this time, no details have been shared on whether there will be a larger, public memorial service.
Dolly will be laid to rest at the Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, Tennessee. She will be buried next to her husband of 59 years, Carl Dean, who passed away in March 2025.
