Garth Brooks Shares His Powerful 9/11 Experience
Garth Brooks became emotional while remembering September 11, 2001, reflecting on the heartbreaking day that changed the nation forever.
Garth was in New York City on 9/11, where he had been reading to children as part of Read Across America Day. His wife, Trisha Yearwood, later recalled frantically trying to reach him after learning of the attacks.
Trisha said her mother called her that morning and “immediately” she knew something was wrong.
“She sounded…different. I immediately knew something was wrong,” Trisha shared back in 2019. “She said, ‘We’re being attacked.’ She was crying and frantic, and worried that the west coast was next.”
Shortly afterward, she remembered that Garth was in the city.
“It was Read Across America day and he was somewhere, in some building in Manhattan, reading to kids. I didn’t know where, but I knew he was THERE,” she wrote.
Thankfully, Garth was nowhere near the Twin Towers, but being so close to the tragedy left a lasting impact on him.
During his show in Chicago on Friday, September 11, Garth took a moment to reflect on that emotional day 25 years ago.
Garth recalled breaking down after seeing tanks in the streets in the aftermath of the attacks. He said he eventually turned on a radio and heard his song “We Shall Be Free,” a song that suddenly carried an entirely different meaning.

Garth is currently on his Blame It All on My Roots Arena Tour, performing four stops at Allstate Arena in Illinois. The tour will continue in Washington, D.C., and Orlando later this month, followed by additional dates in October.
