American Idol‘s Will Moseley Honors Johnny Cash With Supercharged Rendition Of “Folsom Prison Blues”
Will Moseley tipped his hat to Johnny Cash by covering “Folsom Prison Blues” on Monday night’s (April 29) episode of American Idol.
The contestants performed songs chosen for them by the judges. During rehearsals, each contestant got a list of three songs. They didn’t know which judge suggested which song. They selected one of the three tunes and later guessed which judge picked it.
In Moseley’s case, he got to choose between Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” Whiskey Myers’ “Stone,” and Chris Stapleton’s “White Horse.” He originally considered singing “Stone,” but eventually landed on covering the iconic track by “The Man in Black.”

Moseley made it clear in rehearsals that he wanted to give the song his “own spin.” That “spin” included a lively guitar solo mid-song.
Did Moseley’s Johnny Cash Cover Save Him From Elimination On Idol?
Once he hit the Idol stage on Monday night, Moseley brought some serious energy to his cover of “Folsom Prison Blues.” He roared through the lyrics as he worked the crowd, leaving everyone thoroughly entertained.
The audience loved Moseley’s mid-song guitar solo, during which he made a circle around the judges’ table.
Moseley made his way back onstage and kept the energy at an all-time high until the last note. Needless to say, the judges were impressed.
Lionel Richie told Moseley he “killed it” while Katy Perry called it his “best performance yet.” Luke Bryan agreed, and said Moseley keeps “getting better and better.”
Moseley guessed Richie wanted to hear him sing the Johnny Cash classic that night. His guess was right!
But was Moseley’s energetic performance enough to save him from elimination? It was! He advanced into Idol‘s Top 7 and will get to sing on the show again next week. He and the other contestants will cover songs by Adele.
