Kellie Pickler Returns To ‘American Idol’ For Rare Television Appearance

American Idol alum Kellie Pickler returned to the show that made her a star in honor of the 20th anniversary of her season.
Kellie Pickler was joined by four of her fellow American Idol Season 5 alumnus for a special appearance on Monday night’s semi-final episode of Season 24.
Many of Season 5’s cast found success after the show, including Mandisa, Chris Daughtry, Bucky Covington, Katherine McPhee, and the season’s winner, Taylor Hicks.

Kellie Pickler was one of the biggest success stories of that year. With her 6th place finish, Pickler garnered a huge following and found success outside of music. In 2013, she took home the mirrorball trophy alongside her professional partner Derek Hough on the 16th season of Dancing With the Stars.
Pickler also co-hosted a Faith Hill-produced talk show, Pickler & Ben, and starred alongside her husband in a reality television show titled I Love Kellie Pickler.
In 2023, Kellie’s husband, Kyle Jacobs, died at their Nashville area home of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Pickler has mostly remained out of the spotlight since her husband’s death, only performing publicly on one occasion since.
On April 22, 2024, Kellie Pickler marked her first public appearance since Kyle’s death to sing “The Woman I Am” for Walkin’ After Midnight: The Music of Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium. The song was co-written by Kellie and her husband, making it an emotional performance for her and the audience.
Kellie Pickler Returns To American Idol
Kellie Pickler’s American Idol performance on Monday night (May 4) was considered a triumphant return for the star. She was warmly welcomed with thunderous applause and a standing ovation as she performed with Top 5 contender Hannah Harper.
The two sang Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing,” the song Kellie Pickler sang for her Idol audition 20 years ago. The beautiful performance had the audience and judges on their feet.
Lionel Richie called it “dynamic” and “incredible.” Carrie Underwood agreed, calling it “magical.”
Abdul, who was a judge alongside Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson during Kellie Pickler’s season, addressed Kellie’s return.
“Kellie, it seems just like yesterday that I heard you sing that song.”
Kellie addressed her return to the show, calling herself an “antique Idol” and saying that it was “good to be home.”
