Lainey Wilson Started Teasing Something Before The ACM Awards

After weeks of teasing, Lainey Wilson has finally released her new song, “Somewhere Over Laredo.”

Wilson first teased the new track in an Instagram post on May 6, captioned “My head’s 30,000 feet in the clouds.” The post included three slides: the first photo showed her on a plane, while the second photo showed a view of the plane’s wing from the window.

The third and final slide contained a short clip of Wilson performing a new song.

Wilson shared another teaser video on May 7, captioning it, “Flying high somewhere over Laredo,” with a plane and rainbow emoji.

Wilson continued to tease the track after winning multiple trophies at the ACM Awards on May 8 (including Entertainer of the Year). A May 12 Instagram post shows her singing outside in a desert-like scene. She wrote, “You’re on my mind every time I’m chasing this neon rainbow…

Fans soon gathered that Wilson’s dreamy new song was titled “Somewhere Over Laredo.” She continued playing it in multiple social media posts, teasing the lyrics in her captions.

A Deluxe Edition Of Whirlwind Is Arriving In August

Then, on May 22, Wilson shared a large Instagram slideshow that contained several photos and clips of her working on something new. She also posted a picture of airplane tickets from “Whirlwind Airlines” (Whirlwind is the name of her latest album), which had the number “23” printed on them.

When fans visited the QR code on the tickets, it took them to a “flight tracker” page. The page features two trackers, including one for “Somewhere Over Lardeo,” which indicates its “on-time” arrival on Friday, May 23.

The second tracker appeared a little more mysterious. It’s labeled as an “upcoming flight” with an “arrival date” of August 22. Wilson eventually changed her cover photo on Facebook to confirm that a deluxe edition of Whirlwind is dropping on that date.

Her website also includes a page for fans to pre-order and pre-save the deluxe album.

Hear Lainey’s Whimsical New Track, “Somewhere Over Laredo”

As promised, Lainey Wilson released “Somewhere Over Laredo” on Friday, May 23. Speaking about the new track, Wilson said:

“When I’m flying between shows I catch myself looking out the window, talking to God, dreaming, or even reminiscing. ‘Somewhere Over Laredo’ tells a story that speaks to that. I’ve always been inspired by putting myself into other peoples’ shoes and telling stories from others’ perspective, but I’ve found a new creative avenue with this one putting myself back into a pair of shoes that I wore years ago.”

“Somewhere Over Laredo” nods to the Judy Garland classic, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The melody follows the same pattern, and Wilson has used rainbow-themed imagery while promoting the song.

The track also mentions how Wilson finds herself “chasing this neon rainbow,” which directly references Alan Jackson‘s 1990 hit, “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow.”

In addition to releasing “Somewhere Over Laredo,” Wilson also debuted an accompanying “performance video.” You can watch it below.

After hearing Wilson’s whimsical new song, we can’t wait to see what she has in store for August!
