Luke Grimes Returns For Marshals Season 2

Yellowstone’s hit spin-off, Marshals, is now into its second season!

More than 20 million viewers tuned in for the show’s premiere, making its renewal for a second season hardly a surprise. CBS officially renewed the series on March 12, and after the first season wrapped with a cliffhanger finale on May 24, production on Season 2 quickly got underway. The show confirmed filming began in early June.

Centered entirely on Kayce Dutton, Marshals follows John Dutton’s son as he embarks on a new path by joining a specialized team of U.S. Marshals.

The first episode delivered a heartbreaking twist, revealing that Kayce’s beloved wife, Monica, died after battling cancer. It’s later suggested that her illness may have been connected to toxins dumped by a mine on the Broken Rock Reservation.

The devastating loss has clearly taken a major toll on Kayce, and set the stage for the entirety of the series.

Actor Luke Grimes returned to the role as Kayce as well as Broken Rock chairman Thomas Rainwater (played by Gil Birmingham). The spin-off also welcomed a new cast-member, Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Pete “Cal” Calvin, a close friend from Kayce’s military past.

Grimes previously admitted that when he was first approached about returning to that character in Marshals, he wasn’t sure he wanted to do it. The actor felt the character’s story had reached a natural conclusion and worried that revisiting it could undermine the emotional weight built over the course of the show.

His perspective ultimately changed after hearing the creative direction behind the series centered on Kayce’s new path in law enforcement. Grimes shared that once Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan also gave his blessing to the new spin-off, he knew he was up for the role.

Luke Grimes Says He Never Expected Marshals To Do So Well

Despite the show’s wildly successful first season, Grimes admitted he never expected Marshals to make it as far as it has. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor explained that he thought it would be one season and done.

“To be completely honest, that’s what I thought was going to happen. (We’d only go one season). I really thought, ‘At least I don’t have to put him away just yet.’ I love playing Kayce. This has been the greatest character of my life, and here I am, nine years later, still playing him,” Grimes said.

Ultimately, Grimes said he simply didn’t want to get his “hopes up” about how far the show could go.

“I didn’t want to get my hopes up, or have too much expectation. So I was like, if it’s just one season, it’s just one season, and it’ll be fun; I get to put the costume back on. And here we are — it looks like we’ll be doing it for a while.”

Thankfully Grimes was proven wrong and the show seems to be sticking around for a very long time. But for now, he plans to take it a season at a time.

“I don’t know what his master plan is. We’ll talk about one season at a time. It is doing really well, so I would imagine that we’ll keep going. But we really don’t know until we get a season three pickup if there’s going to be a season three,” Grimes continued. “You just have to take it a season at a time. I think if you start to think too long term, maybe you spread it a little thin, and if you just give everything you have to this season right now, then we’ll let what happens down the road figure itself out then.”

You can catch Luke Grimes on Marshals every Sunday at 8 PM ET on CBS.
