Luke Grimes Explains Why He Refuses To Watch Himself In “Marshals”

Thousands of fans tune in to watch Luke Grimes on TV every week, but he won’t be one of them.
Season 2 of Marshals is officially underway after returning on October 4, picking up where things left off with all the chaos that seems to follow Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton.
Nearly 8 million people tuned in to watch the premiere episode on CBS. When next-day streaming on Paramount+ was added, that number jumped to an impressive 20 million viewers.
So far, two episodes of Marshals Season 2 have aired. If you need to catch up, Country Rebel has full recaps of Episode 1 and Episode 2.

Clearly, fans are eager to see what happens next in Kayce’s journey. But while they can’t wait to watch him on screen again, Grimes admits he has one rule when it comes to his work: He never watches the shows he stars in.
Why Luke Grimes Refuses To Watch Himself On TV
It’s not that Grimes isn’t proud of the projects he’s part of. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. He believes not watching his own performances helps him become a better actor.
Recently, Grimes attended the Raiders-Chiefs football game at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, celebrating the Marshals Season 2 premiere with his co-stars.
While there, he spoke with PEOPLE and admitted that “I don’t enjoy watching myself.”
“I don’t know that it’s very helpful for me to watch myself. In fact, I think it, it might actually hurt my process a little bit,” he continued.
“I wouldn’t say I’m a method actor — whatever that term means these days. I have a method, and that method can change from job to job. Sometimes I find things necessary to find a character, and that same thing might not work on the next job.”
When it comes to playing Kayce, though, Grimes knows exactly what it takes. After portraying the character on Yellowstone from 2018 to 2024 and now leading his own spinoff, he says his approach to Kayce is pretty much set in stone.
“I’ve got a very specific way that I have approached playing Kayce,” he says. “I’ve been doing it so long now that it takes a little less work to get there at this point.”

Grimes also doesn’t want to be influenced by the other Yellowstone spinoffs. That’s why he’s never watched Dutton Ranch.
“I almost felt like watching [Dutton Ranch] while I was shooting [Marshals] might kind of paint and color in my brain that I don’t need right now,” Grimes told TV Insider.
“We’re doing such a different show, and they’re trying to do a continuation of Yellowstone, where Marshals is a different format, a different pace, a different tone. It’s obviously got a procedural element, and so [I’m] trying to really, really stick with what we’re doing over here. I will definitely watch Dutton Ranch at some point.”
You can watch Grimes in action on Season 2 of Marshals, airing every Sunday at 8 PM ET on CBS
