Season One of Marshals ended on several cliffhangers, leaving many of our favorite main characters’ lives in danger.

Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle Skinner (Arielle Kibbel) were last seen being ambushed by a gunmen that turned out to be Jeb (Kevin McNamara), the right-hand man of Tom Weaver (Chris Maulkey).

Moments later, we saw Kayce Dutton’s son Tate (Breckin Merrill) board a private plane with Tom and Jeb to go to Texas for a fishing trip.

As viewers, we know this can only be bad news, as Kayce had just turned down Weaver’s offer to buy his land…again.

This makes things even more complicated as Kayce and Tom Weaver’s daughter, Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson), begin to explore a romantic relationship.

In July, the show released a short teaser, which showed Kayce in a dangerous situation. An eerie voice said to him, “I’ve heard stories about the Duttons.”

“The fact that you’re doing this tells me you haven’t heard them all,” Kayce replied and immediately fought back. Knowing Kayce, he probably won this fight!

The Season Two trailer showed many clips of Belle and Cal, so we assumed they survive the ambush. It also showed Kayce learning of Tate’s abduction and we just know he will do anything to get him back.

Season 2 Episode 1 – “All Hat No Cattle”

The log line of the episode reads, “When Kayce realizes Tate has been taken hostage, he goes rogue in a desperate race to save his son as the Marshals uncover a powerful criminal operation tied to the East Camp land grab. A violent showdown ensues, putting everything Kayce cares about at risk.”

The episode begins right where we left off, with Belle and Cal being ambushed and somehow, they escaped with minimal injuries. But they also were able to grab photos of Jeb and burner phones to do some investigating.

We see Kayce Dutton for the first time this season at his home in East Camp. An attorney for Tom Weaver arrives and ups his offer to Kayce to buy his ranch. Obviously, Kayce declines and the two men now attack Kayce physically before telling him they took Tate…and not on a fishing trip.

Defending himself, Kayce shoots the men with guns and stabs the lawyer. He confronts Dolly about the situation, thinking she was in on it the whole time to try and get him to let his guard down.

She admits she knew nothing about Tate’s kidnapping, and Kayce believes her after she tells him exactly where Tate is: in Wyoming. To get his son back, Kayce agrees to sell his ranch, so he and Dolly start making the 300-mile drive.

Meanwhile, the Marshals team is digging up information on Jeb, and found out that he works for Tom Weaver. This led them to do more research on Weaver. They find out he is essentially running a Ponzi scheme, buying different ranches, faking invoices and claiming they had hundreds of thousands of cattle on their properties.

The Marshals load up in a helicopter to help Kayce.

Kayce, Dolly, & The Marshals Land In Wyoming

Kayce and Dolly are pulling up to her father’s Wyoming ranch with the Sheriff intercepts them. He removes Kayce’s rifle from the backseat, but doesn’t realize Kayce hid his handgun under his seat. Kayce convinces Dolly to hide the gun on her and to pull it on her father when he gives the signal.

When they meet up with Tom, Kayce signs over his ranch, but Jeb takes Tate away in a 4×4 and Tom signals a dozen men on horseback with guns to appear.

That’s when Kayce gives Dolly the signal to pull the gun on her father, but he convinces her to give it to him and he points it at Kayce. Tom pulls the trigger, but he didn’t know (and Dolly, didn’t either) that there weren’t any bullets left in the gun. A fight ensues, but Kayce takes cover because he is essentially unarmed.

After reloading his gun, he funs and jumps into a river to get away from the gunmen. In the middle of the gunfight, the Marshals arrive in the helicopter and help Kayce.

Tate jumped out of the 4×4 and tries to run away from Jeb, but he catches up and they wrestle in a river, where Jeb was attempted to drown Tate. Kayce arrived just in time to kill Jeb and save Tate.

“What did I do wrong?” Tate asked him.

“You did nothing wrong, expect for being my son,” Kayce replied.

After reuniting with the team, they chase down Tom and Dolly, Kayce on horseback and the rest in a vehicle.

They give Tom a chance to let Dolly out of the vehicle and deal with the consequences himself, but he fled, driving down a cliff. He crashed into a rock and they rolled over several times.

When Kayce approached the vehicle, we see that Dolly is badly injured and moments later, Kayce feels for a pulse and tells Tom, “She’s dead.”

Tom begs for forgiveness and understands that Kayce must kill him.

Kayce took his hand off the trigger and said, “I think living with Dolly’s death is the punishment you deserve.”

We leave Tom weeping in the car next to his daughter.

The Marshals Return To HQ

Back at HQ, Cal and Belle share an intimate moment when he bandages her cheek up, and she tells him she is joining him at his oncologist appointment that week.

Andrea also revealed she would not be going back to DC, and will remain part of their team for good. She knows they all have each others back and she would do anything for them.

Kayce and Tate return home to shattered glass and blood on the floor. Kayce admits that it hurts his heart to think about all the trauma Tate has endured in his young life from losing his mother, to being kidnapped twice, to all the death around them.

Tate reminds his dad that he is turning 18 in a few months, which made Kayce reflect on his son approaching adulthood.

The episode ends there. What did y’all think of the Season 2 premiere!?

Episode 2 airs on CBS on Sunday, October 11, and the next day on Paramount+.
