“Marshals” Star Luke Grimes Explains How Kayce & Tate’s Relationship Will Change In Season 2

Luke Grimes and Brecken Merrill reprised their roles as father-son duo Kayce and Tate Dutton in the Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals. The series debuted on CBS in March of this year (2026). Now, we’re less than a week away from the Season 2 premiere.

Season 1 saw Kayce finding his footing in his new position on an elite team of U.S. Marshals in Montana. This comes following the death of his wife, and Tate’s mother, Monica, who died off-screen following a battle with cancer.
After such a heartbreaking loss and everything else that unfolded in Season 1, things changed drastically for Kayce and Tate.
In a new video, Grimes shared three words to explain how the dynamic of their relationship will continue to shift in Season 2. He remarked that everything will be “a little strained” between the pair.
Grimes dove in further, saying, “[That’s] mostly because of everything that Tate’s gone through from the time he was a child up until he was most recently just kidnapped. He’s gone through a lot.”
Merrill doubled down on Grimes’ comments, saying Kayce and Tate’s relationship “sorta went back down” after the Season 1 finale.

What Can Fans Expect From Season 2 Of Marshals?
Based on one of Grimes’ prior interviews, a lot is going to change for Kayce in Season 2. He told Entertainment Weekly that Kayce is going to relax a little more and enjoy some time with his Marshals teammates off the clock.
“He’s hanging out with everybody a little more. He’s going to the bar a little more,” Grimes said, before continuing to say that Kayce “starts to get a glimpse of his future and what he’s seeing seems very lonely. He’s gonna have to start seeking community somewhere.”
Will part of that “community” be a new love interest? Grimes touched on that subject too, telling Entertainment Weekly, “Yeah, I think so — obviously [they’ll introduce a love interest] slowly and cautiously.”
He added, “Some time has passed, and I think we have to put Kayce in some situations where you don’t blame him for wanting to open up that way.”
Season 2 of Marshals premieres on CBS on Sunday, October 4, at 8:30 PM ET. Future episodes will air at 8:00 PM ET on Sundays.
