Marshals returned to television on October 4th and hit the ground running. Picking up right where they left off, the story continued seamlessly into the brand-new season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 8.21 million people tuned live on CBS in to watch the premiere of Season Two. When you add in all the next day streams on Paramount+, that number goes up to 20.4 million.

In the Season Two premiere, Kayce and his Marshals teammates simultaneously found out that the man he had been forming a friendly relationship for most of Season One, Tom Weaver, was actually behind all the attacks on his property, East Camp.

Kayce and Tom’s daughter, Dolly, went to confront Tom after he kidnapped Kayce’s son.

The confrontation with Tom turned deadly, with most of his henchmen dying, as well as his daughter, Dolly. Kayce returns home with Tate, who reminds his dad that he is turning 18 years old in just a few months. This makes Kayce reflect on all the trauma his son has endured during his childhood.

The log line for Season 2, Episode 2, is as follows:

“When a former cop launches a killing spree against those he blames for sabotaging his career, the Marshals close in and one of their own finds themselves in the crosshairs of the vengeful killer. Also, Rainwater faces mounting political pressure and backlash over his leadership on the reservation and Belle struggles to keep her family life stable.”

Marshals Season 2, Episode 2 – “End of Watch” Recap

The episode opens with a man in a car shooting a seemingly random man. But in the world of Marshals, we know nothing is ever truly random.

Kayce and his teammate Andrea Santos install new surveillance equipment around East Camp. During their conversation, we learn that Tom Weaver remains behind bars after being denied release to attend his daughter’s funeral.

Meanwhile, in town, Cal and his daughter, Maddie, bond over coffee. During their conversation, Cal discovers that Maddie ended up in Montana because of a boyfriend.

Belle is also dealing with the aftermath of the ambush in the Season 2 premiere. Her son, Braxton, is worried about her injury, while she faces pushback from her husband, who was once a trusted partner.

Tate Struggles With the Dutton Legacy

Chairman Rainwater and Mo arrive at East Camp to offer Mo’s nephew, Troy, the opportunity to help rebuild their house.

But when they hear a scream in the distance, Kayce’s protective instincts kick in. He immediately goes to check on Tate, only to discover that his son is nowhere to be found.

Kayce even checks under Tate’s bed, the hiding spot he remembers from the last time his son was rescued after being kidnapped.

Kayce heads out on horseback to search for him. Along the way, he encounters a bison. In Yellowstone, encounters with animals often carried a deeper meaning for Kayce, and this moment feels no different. Only time will tell what nature is trying to tell him this time.

Eventually, Kayce finds Tate at John Dutton’s grave. Tate opens up about his feelings toward Tom Weaver, admitting that Weaver turned out to be evil and that he feels guilty for ever comparing him to his grandfather.

Kayce tries to help his son understand the weight of their family legacy.

“Our family legacy was never about land. It’s about always having a fight. It takes a heavy toll,” Kayce tells him.

“Good thing I’m strong. It’s what you and grandpa raised me to be. It’s the Dutton way,” Tate replies.

The exchange highlights the difficult balance Kayce faces as a father. He wants Tate to be strong, but he also knows firsthand the emotional cost of growing up a Dutton.

Chairman Rainwater Faces Growing Pressure

Elsewhere, Chairman Rainwater attends an event where he is confronted by families affected by the attacks against his community. Frustrated by what they see as unfulfilled promises, they warn Rainwater that they plan to rally against him if he fails to deliver on his commitments.

The confrontation adds another layer of pressure as Rainwater works to rebuild trust and move forward.

Cal Reveals a Major Secret

While traveling back from an operation, Cal opens up to Belle about his health. He reveals that he underwent chemotherapy and radiation, followed by what he describes as a “pretty invasive” surgery.

Belle encourages him to tell the rest of the team, but Cal resists. He would rather keep his medical situation private, at least for now. However, he knows he will eventually have to take leave for another surgery.

For Cal, the decision to tell his teammates becomes a question of when he is ready to let them in on what he has been going through.

The Marshals Hunt a Former Deputy

Back at headquarters, the team receives its next assignment: tracking down Gallatin County Deputy Wayne Plummer, who is wanted for manufacturing and selling homemade suppressors.

Plummer was fired following disciplinary issues and has a former SWAT background, prompting the Marshals to prepare for a high-risk operation.

As the team sweeps his property, Belle steps onto a floor mat and suddenly freezes. She realizes she has triggered a bomb and that stepping off the mat could set it off.

After several tense moments, Kayce manages to disarm the device. The team then discovers Plummer’s workshop and begins piecing together his motive: revenge against the people in law enforcement he believes failed to support him.

The Marshals identify Plummer’s next potential target, but they arrive too late to prevent another attack. Two deputies he lured to the scene have already been shot by the time Kayce and Andrea arrive. One is dead, while the other is barely clinging to life.

The team realizes they must anticipate Plummer’s next move rather than simply react to his attacks. Their investigation also uncovers a possible motive involving Plummer’s son, Boone, who was rejected from the training academy.

The Marshals finally connect the dots to the man shot in the episode’s opening scene. He was Plummer’s former supervisor at the Butte Police Department, the man who fired him years earlier.

Plummer Takes His Revenge to the Coroner’s Office

The situation escalates when Plummer opens fire on Kayce, Cal, and their boss, Harry Gifford, outside headquarters. During the pursuit, the team discovers that Gifford was the sheriff who fired Plummer 18 years ago.

The Marshals race to warn everyone at the coroner’s office, where a dignified transfer is being held for the fallen officers. But Plummer gets there first and shoots Gifford. Fortunately, Gifford is wearing a bulletproof vest and survives the attack.

The team soon realizes that Plummer’s son is also firing at law enforcement officers, turning the situation into an even more dangerous confrontation.

Belle and Cal locate the room where Plummer is hiding. Suspecting that the entrance may be booby-trapped, they refuse to rush inside. Instead, they blow a hole through the wall. When Plummer begins shooting at Cal, they are forced to kill him.

Meanwhile, Andrea and Kayce find Boone in the hallway. Convinced that his father will answer his radio call, Boone struggles to accept what has happened. Andrea finally tells him that his father is dead.

Kayce understands that Boone’s loyalty to his father is complicated. He knows what it is like to love a father whose choices can lead to devastating consequences.

“He was flawed, but you loved him anyway. There’s not shame in being loyal to family,” Kayce tells Boone. “Just because he marched you through hell doesn’t mean you gotta become the devil. Let today be his legacy, not yours.”

Kayce’s words finally get through to Boone, who surrenders.

The moment offers a powerful parallel to Kayce’s own relationship with his father and his determination to help Tate make different choices, even while honoring the family he comes from.

Cal Comes Clean With the Team

After the operation, Gifford apologizes to Cal for his role in the tragedy. He was the one who rejected Boone’s application to the training academy, and he recognizes that speaking up about that connection sooner might have helped the team anticipate the danger and potentially prevent lives from being lost.

Gifford’s admission gives Cal something to think about. If Gifford can acknowledge his own role in what happened, perhaps it is time for Cal to stop hiding his own circumstances.

Inspired by the conversation, Cal finally decides to share his health struggles with the team.

Belle Faces a Difficult Decision at Home

While Belle finishes her work, her husband and son wait for her. Braxton is understandably frightened after hearing news reports about a “cop killer” targeting law enforcement.

His fear forces Belle to confront the impact her dangerous job has on her family. She begins coming to terms with the possibility that staying in her marriage may be necessary for Braxton’s sake, even as she continues to struggle with her relationship with her husband.

Her storyline remains a reminder that the dangers the Marshals face on the job don’t end when they return home.

A Fresh Start at East Camp

Back at East Camp, Mo’s nephew, Troy, is nearly finished repairing the interior of Kayce’s house. Mo performs a sage-cleansing ritual, clearing the space and symbolically making room for a fresh start.

Kayce and Rainwater then discuss Tate’s future. Kayce admits that he doesn’t want his son to follow in his footsteps, knowing the pain and burdens that come with the Dutton legacy.

Rainwater reminds him that Tate will ultimately become the person he is meant to be. Kayce’s job isn’t to decide his son’s future for him, but to guide him toward making the right choices.

As the episode comes to a close, that message feels especially important. Kayce cannot protect Tate from every hardship, just as he cannot erase his family’s past. But he can help his son understand that being a Dutton doesn’t mean repeating the same mistakes.
