On Sunday, November 1st, Marshals aired the sixth episode of Season Two on CBS.

Andrea was already going through some trauma from her Season One situation where she was kidnapped by the Cleggs, but she is attempting to work towards it.

Belle is dealing with her gambling debt, Cal is still undergoing chemo and worrying about his temporary replacement, while Miles is wrestling with the fact that he has to lie to his girlfriend about her dad’s diagnosis.

Episode four ended on a major cliffhanger that left Kayce and Andrea’s lives in danger after they followed a criminal into a barn and he detonated a bomb. Read our full recap of Episode Five below.

‘Marshals’ Season 2, Episode 5 – “Secret Weapon”

The log line for the episode reads, “After a close call with a suicide bomber, the Marshals hunt for a co-conspirator armed with an even larger explosive. The trail leads them to a suspect’s family whose deep distrust of the government makes getting answers nearly impossible.”

The episode picks up right where the previous episode left off, in the aftermath of the bomb exploding inside the barn. Kayce and Andrea manage to escape with only a few bumps and bruises, but Rudy Carpenter, the man who detonated the bomb, is killed in the explosion.

The Marshals discover eight lids from barrels of ANFO (ammonium nitrate and fuel oil) along with tire tracks, leading them to believe the bomb has already been assembled and is being transported somewhere. However, they have no idea who or what the intended target might be, or who Carpenter was working with.

Back at headquarters, the team cleans up and begins investigating who could be behind the explosives. Meanwhile, Belle receives a text from her husband informing her that the same man who confronted her and her son earlier has shown up at their house. She lies to her husband, insisting she has no idea why the man would be there, before using her work computer to dig into his background.

Miles soon reveals that investigators found another set of fingerprints on the ANFO barrel lids. They belong to Derek McCoy, an acquaintance of another man the team had been investigating in connection with a separate crime.

The Marshals head to the McCoy residence, where they immediately detain four people. However, when another man spots them inside the house, he takes off toward the basement.

Andrea is the closest marshal and gives chase, despite the fact that she has been struggling with PTSD connected to basements and her traumatic experience being held captive by the Clegg family in Season One.

The suspect manages to get away, but Kayce pursues him into a nearby barn. When the man attempts to flee, the structure suddenly collapses on top of them. With Kayce’s communications equipment knocked out, he begins questioning Will, Derek’s brother, about Derek’s whereabouts and the ANFO.

Kayce quickly realizes they are in even more danger than they initially thought. The collapse has severed a gas line, and a nearby power line could create a spark and trigger an explosion if they don’t find a way out.

Will is trapped beneath the debris with a broken leg, but he refuses to cooperate or provide any information about Derek’s location or the vehicle he is driving. Will admits he is the punching bag of the family. Kayce eventually resets Will’s leg, telling him his mother was right about him being the runt of the litter.

While Kayce works to get them out of the barn, he tries a different approach to reach Will.

“You remind me of my middle brother,” Kayce tells him. “Never quite fit in, was always on the bad end of a beatdown. My sister made his life hell.”

When Will attempts to make fun of Jamie for being bullied by a girl, Kayce reminds him, “She’d eat you for lunch.”

Kayce goes on to explain how Jamie eventually turned his differences into an advantage for him, hoping to inspire Will to turn the corner.

“He had to be smarter, more cunning, and eventually he broke from the family and forged his own path. The point is, it’s never too late to start over,” Kayce tells him.

The two eventually manage to escape the collapsed barn. However, when Kayce again asks Will for the make and model of Derek’s vehicle, Will refuses to cooperate. Kayce then takes a more threatening approach, reminding him what happened to Jamie after he chose to break away from the family. Spoiler alert: he died.

This is the first time in this show that Kayce references his brother Jamie at all.

Back at the McCoy residence, Belle develops an unexpected connection with one of the McCoy daughters-in-law. The two bond over their shared desire to protect their children while feeling trapped in difficult situations. Cal overhears their conversation, and Belle tries to brush it off as “tactical improv.” Cal, however, makes it clear that she can tell him anything.

Meanwhile, Miles finds himself in a confrontation with one of the McCoy men. When the man attacks him, Miles defends himself, but Cal witnesses only part of the exchange and accuses Miles of being overly physical.

Belle eventually discovers a connection between Derek, Rudy, Derek’s brother Johnny, and the ANFO trucks. When the team hears noises coming from the basement, they investigate and discover Mason, Johnny’s 10-year-old son, hiding there.

Knowing that children often hear and notice more than adults realize, Belle tries to get the boy talking. Mason reveals that the last time he saw his Uncle Derek, he had shared information that could help the Marshals figure out what was happening.

At the same time, Andrea makes a breakthrough while speaking with Johnny’s wife. She reveals that Derek intends to use the ANFO to target a bank that foreclosed on the family’s home.

With the intended target finally identified, Kayce and Belle locate a truck matching the description in the bank’s parking garage. Unfortunately, it’s empty. They soon discover that the bankers responsible for foreclosing on the McCoy family’s home are attending a luncheon at a hotel about a mile away.

The team spots a truck matching the description stuck in traffic and quickly puts together a plan to intercept it. By keeping the traffic light red, they manage to approach the vehicle from behind and catch Derek off guard. The operation is successful, and the Marshals kill Derek before he has a chance to detonate the bomb.

Back at headquarters, Gifford tells Cal that he can choose his own replacement. Cal then makes his decision known to the team, revealing that Andrea will be taking over the position.

Elsewhere, Belle finally confronts the man who has been trying to shake her down for money. She makes it clear that he needs to leave her son out of the situation and threatens to have his daughter, who is currently on parole, arrested.

Miles also finds himself facing a potentially significant decision. He meets with the man who convinced Rainwater to open a marijuana farm, who reveals that he plans to run against Rainwater for Chairman. He wants Miles’ endorsement in the upcoming race.

The episode closes on a more personal note for Kayce and Andrea. Andrea visits Kayce, and the two finally have an honest conversation about the trauma she has been carrying since her experience with the Cleggs. She explains why she has been spending her nights hunting fugitives alongside him.

As Kayce gets up to make her some tea, Andrea eventually falls asleep on his couch. After everything she has been through, perhaps she finally feels safe enough at Kayce’s house to get some much-needed rest without being haunted by nightmares.

And that final scene could be especially interesting for fans who have been hoping to see Kayce and Andrea’s relationship develop into something more romantic. While nothing is confirmed, this episode may be laying the groundwork for a deeper connection between the two.

Tune in on Sunday, November 8th for Episode 6!
