“That sucks for anyone,” says Miranda Lambert, ten years after her divorce from fellow country star Blake Shelton.

The “Crisco” singer has rarely spoken about her split in the last decade. Blake and Miranda began dating in 2006, got engaged in 2010, and tied the knot in 2011 during a ceremony in Texas.

For the first half of the 2010s, they were a country music power couple. They both continued to release new music, dominate radio waves, and fill their trophy cases with awards. In 2015, they announced their split, and the divorce was finalized that same day. They did not share the reason for the divorce publicly.

How Miranda Lambert Channeled Heartbreak Into Music

In a new conversation on Ross Golan’s And The Writer Is… podcast, Miranda reflected on the stark contrast between her 2014 album, Platinum, and her 2016 album, The Weight of These Wings. The change, she said, came from what was actually happening in her personal life.

“I got divorced, and that sucks for anyone, especially in the public eye, especially on tour, especially in the middle of a very public career — two of us. It just was a really not fun time.”

Following the split, Miranda moved back to Nashville full-time and “dove headfirst” into songwriting. She explained:

“I used the misery; I used the staying out too late at honky tonks. I used what I was living, and my friends went on that journey with me — friends being songwriters.”

The now 42-year-old recalls writing roughly 75 songs in the first four months she was back in town. She used that “raw emotion” to grow as a songwriter, rather than to write for a specific record or a specific sound, as she had done previously.

Ultimately, Miranda says sharing those songs and “laying it out there” was “worth it.”

The country star is now married to Brendan McLoughlin, whom she met while filming Good Morning America in 2018. They wed the following year.
