Toby Keith has topped the charts this week with his song “Don’t Let The Old Man In” which jumped to No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart. This marks Keith’s second No. 1 on the chart, with his previous hit “Red Solo Cup” dominating the chart for 14 consecutive weeks back in 2011.
“Don’t Let the Old Man In” has also climbed the all-genre Digital Song Sales survey, jumping from No. 19 to No. 3 this week. This is Keith’s highest rank on the chart so far and adds to his three top 10 hits overall.
Even though the song was originally written and released in 2018, it has gained rapid momentum after Keith’s emotional appearance at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards in late September. The singer-songwriter performed “Don’t Let The Old Man In” after accepting the Country Icon award.
This was Keith’s first televised performance since sharing the news of his stomach cancer diagnosis last summer. See the performance below:
“Don’t Let The Old Man In” Was Inspired By A Conversation With Clint Eastwood
Fans were surprised to learn that a casual conversation with Clint Eastwood is what inspired Toby Keith to write the poignant song. In 2017, Keith and Eastwood shared a cart at a charity golf tournament in Pebble Beach, California. Keith was in awe of the then-88-year-old’s energy and desire to keep working, and asked Eastwood how he does it:
“He said, ‘I just get up every morning and go out. And I don’t let the old man in,’” Keith recalled. “And I thought, I’m writing that.”
