The Trump Administration Is Aiming To Make Fertility Treatment And Childcare More Affordable

On Mother’s Day, May 10, the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services unveiled “a groundbreaking website for new and expecting mothers,” called Moms.gov.

This was announced in a press release, but was then commemorated in an event in the Oval Office of the White House the next day, May 11.

There, President Donald Trump said, “Today, I am pleased to announce that the Department of Labor is issuing a new rule to formally create a fertility benefit option for employers.”

This health insurance plan including a fertility benefit option, he said, will be “available to all employees outside of their normal health insurance plan,” with Trump adding, “That’s a big deal.”

Comparing the plan to dental or vision plans, which are often supplementally offered in insurance plans for individuals who need them, Trump said, “By offering coverage for care at every step of the fertility journey … this will hopefully reduce the number of couples who ultimately need to resort to IVF, because challenges can be identified and addressed very early in the process.”

He then said, “This is a new benefit, or an option, that will be a major help for millions of Americans moms that will result in more American babies — we like that.”

Presently, it is not clear when this will be available, but PBS notes that care covered under the new rule is expected to “have a lifetime cap of $120,000 for the participant and their beneficiaries.”

More On The New Policy

To accomplish this, Trump announced that an effort was made “to further reduce the cost of fertility care” by negotiating Most Favored Nations agreements with “all of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies and nations.”

Providing an example of the savings allotted to those who do pursue IVF, Trump said the Most Favored Nation policy led to one drug dropping in cost from $966 to $168.

This kind of benefit is already available on TrumpRX.gov.

“This is the biggest medical story there is,” Trump said, noting that 19,000 Americans have accessed the IVF drugs on TrumpRX, saving $15,000,000.

Noting that “there are many other ways our administration is supporting moms and women,” Trump pointed to the tax cuts his administration passed with the One, Big, Beautiful Bill.

Through these savings, Trump said the policies his administration is implementing will “free up childcare funding support for hundreds of thousands of additional children to support stay-at-home parents.”

Turning to the creation of Moms.gov, Trump said, “I encourage every mom to visit this new webpage where they will find helpful information.”

Examples of information found on Moms.gov include:

  • Support Services and Health Centers (Pregnancy Centers and FQHCs);
  • Nutrition quick facts for mothers based on the Dietary Guideline for Americans;
  • Trump Accounts;
  • Trump Rx;
  • Resources for women and parents;
  • Preconception health;
  • Breastfeeding;
  • Mental health; and
  • Adoption.

During the announcement, Sen. Katie Britt, R-AL, expounded upon the value of Moms.gov, saying, “It supports moms through the prenatal, postpartum, and early childhood development stages of motherhood.”

She went on to note that Trump is the first president since President Ronald Reagan to “put childcare front and center” through a modernized tax code.

HHS Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. went on to call Moms.gov a “one-stop shop,” adding that America is in the midst of a fertility crisis.

This fertility crisis, RFK Jr. said, is “an existential crisis,” and is one that he has been tasked with identifying the causes of before the situation worsens.

Before turning to the guests in the Oval Office, Trump concluded his remarks by saying, “Supporting the journey of American moms at every stage is so important to the success of our nation.”
