The long break was initially due to scheduling conflicts with star Kevin Costner, but before they could begin to resolve that, the Writer’s Guild of America and the Screen Actor’s Guild went on strike.

So, not only was the show stalled because the writers could not finish writing the season, but if it were written, they couldn’t even film it because the actors were on strike, too.

Following the strike, it was confirmed that Costner would not be returning to the show, leaving fans with so many unanswered questions.

Finally, the actors returned to work and have been teasing us with photos on set this entire time. While the actors have promoted the final six episodes on various talk shows and interviews, they can’t give too much away! Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, even explained the lengths everyone went through to keep the plot a secret.

John Dutton’s fate in Yellowstone revealed

Season Five, Episode Nine, didn’t waste any time. We almost immediately discover that Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, has passed away. Beth shows up to the Governor’s mansion to see it completely taped off, with police blocking off the entrance to anyone and an ambulance in the driveway.

Fans probably figured John Dutton would die, but not even John Dutton himself knew how or when. Kevin Costner appeared on the SIRIUS XM show The Michael Smerconish Program on Monday (November 11) and admitted he had no idea the episode was airing.

He said, “I swear to God. I mean, I’ve been seeing ads with my face all over the place, and I’m thinking, ‘Gee, I’m not in that one.’ I’m not in this season. But I’ve been seeing, but I didn’t realize yesterday was the thing. I really have, my focus has been on what I was having to do, and I’ve got a few calls to make.”

Fans react to John Dutton’s fate

It has been reported that over 16 million people tuned in to Yellowstone on Sunday (November 10) and many of them have taken their opinions of the episode online.

There has been a split reaction to how Yellowstone handled Kevin Costner’s exit, and not everyone is happy about it.

See some negative reactions below.

“It was awful. No Kevin Costner. It felt rushed and badly acted. I don’t mean to take away from the hard work of the cast but it just seemed so strung out and rushed”

“It was weird. Acting seemed off, overly scripted and just not the same. It’s obvious that Sheridan is dumping it. If only he’d finish and air one show at a time it might be better for the audience.”

“I am already extremely disappointed!! I waited all this time for some bull”

“I’m so disappointed and Hurt that it is ending of John Dutton this way.. ugh Taylor Sheridan left us in disbelief. SMH”

“Soooooo disappointed!! Writing is horrible , seems a little personal with the character….storyline is not believable.. should not have had this season”

“I’m very disappointed with this new episode. The lead actors were great but Sheridans work is sloppy and not worth waiting on. He sure ruined a great show.”

“They could have gave Costner a better send off then that”

“Terrible. I hate this is how they started”

And now some positive ones!

“Stellar performance from Kelly Reilly (Beth) tonight! Watching her made me feel so much for her and Kayce! I went from anger to bawling my eyes out with her! She’s an excellent actress!”

“Both of them were brilliant! They must know Dutton would never kill himself”

“Great episode it was worth the 2 year wait”

“Incredible episode. Did not expect the opening scene at all. Stunned. The whole thing is as good as it gets. Can’t wait for the rest.”

“I need more and right now danngit!”

“Wow unbelievable start ….beths revenge watch out I bet it’s brutal”

There is plenty more where that came from.

It’s no surprise that there have been so many people outspoken about their opinions on the episode, seeing as over 16 million people watched it!

Time will tell what the fate of our other favorite characters is. See the Season Five teaser below.
