Since premiering in 2002, American Idol has become one of the biggest launching pads for country music stars

While the competition on American Idol originally leaned heavily toward pop and R&B performers, country singers quickly emerged as some of the show’s most successful contestants both commercially and critically.

Over the years, several winners and finalists have gone on to dominate the country charts, win major awards, and become household names in Nashville.

The show’s first major country success story came in Season 4 with Carrie Underwood. After winning the competition in 2005, Underwood became arguably the most successful artist in Idol history.

Her debut album, Some Hearts, produced massive hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats,” helping her become a multi-platinum superstar. Underwood went on to win numerous Grammy Awards, headline arenas around the world, and solidify herself as one of modern country music’s defining voices. Her success proved that Idol could produce legitimate country superstars, not just pop acts.

A few years later, Scotty McCreery carried the country tradition forward when he won Season 10 in 2011 at just 17 years old. Known for his deep voice and traditional country style, McCreery quickly found success on country radio with songs like “Five More Minutes” and “In Between.”

Around the same era, contestants like Lauren Alaina and Kellie Pickler also built successful country careers despite not winning the show. Pickler, in particular, became a fan favorite thanks to her personality and later found success with hits such as “Red High Heels.”

Several other country-oriented contestants have used Idol as a springboard into Nashville careers. Gabby Barrett finished third during the show’s ABC revival but later exploded onto the country scene with her crossover hit “I Hope.”

Laine Hardy brought a Southern rock-country style to the show and won in 2019, while artists like Cade Foehner and Caleb Lee Hutchinson also embraced traditional country influences during their runs, proving that contestants who did not finish near the top sometimes found success in country music after Idol.

Today, country singers remain some of the most memorable contestants to emerge from American Idol. From Carrie Underwood’s superstar success to newer artists finding viral fame and radio hits, the series has played a major role in shaping modern country music over the last two decades.

But sometimes, American Idol gets it wrong, and they reject talented singers who go on and become famous singers. Some have even won Grammy Awards!

Take a look at 7 country singers who were rejected by American Idol.

Colton Swon

Colton Swon auditioned for American Idol in Season 7 and wowed the judges with his cover of Little Big Town’s “Boondocks.” He advanced to Hollywood Week but got cut during that round.

He famously did well on another singing competition show, The Voice, but this time with his brother Zach as The Swon Brothers. They placed second on the 4th season of the show with the help of coach Blake Shelton in 2013.

Since their time on The Voice, they have opened for acts including Carrie Underwood, and released five singles, two EPs, and a self-titled album that peaked at number six on the charts.

Mickey Guyton

Mickey Guyton, who went by Mycale Guyton at the time, also auditioned for Season 7 of American Idol. In 2024, she opened up about her time on the show during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.

“I did [audition], and they threw me away,” she said. Responding to a fan question asking if she’s heard from any of the judges since she became famous. She revealed that Randy Jackson has been “very lovely” to her.

Despite her American Idol rejection, Guyton has gone on to sing at the biggest stages, including singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in 2022.

Maren Morris

In 2023, Maren Morris revealed that she didn’t make it past the “cattle call” auditions with producers of American Idol. She couldn’t even fault judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson because she never even sang in front of them!

Now, she is a hit singer-songwriter with a Grammy Award, an American Music Award, five Country Music Association Awards, and five Academy of Country Music Awards.

Her biggest songs to date include “My Church,” “I Could Use a Love Song,” “Bones,” plus a 6x Platinum pop hit “The Middle” with Zedd and Grey.

Chris Lane

Chris Lane auditioned for Season 7 of American Idol alongside his twin brother Cory. Weirdly enough, they brought along their shared girlfriend Ashley, who also auditioned.

Chris started beatboxing, while Cory rapped and they were (not shockingly) rejected on the spot. In case you were wondering, so was Ashley.

Several years later, Chris ditched the beatboxing for actual singing and scored five Top Ten hits, including three No. 1’s, “Fix,” “I Don’t Know About You,” and “Big, Big Plans.”

Kane Brown

Kane Brown was inspired to audition for American Idol after the success of his classmate, Lauren Alaina. Unfortunately, he was cut early. He also auditioned for The X Factor USA, but when they wanted to put him in a boy band, he left the show.

He decided to pursue music his own way, by posting cover videos on social media. In 2016, he reunited with Alaina for a duet titled “What Ifs,” which became his first No. 1 single.

He returned to American Idol for Season 17 to perform “Lost In The Middle With You” with finalist Alyssa Raghu. If that wasn’t full circle enough, he returned to mentor the Top 5 in May 2024.

Hillary Scott

Lady A singer Hilary Scott auditioned for American Idol not once, but twice and was rejected both times.

In an interview in 2012, she revealed that the rejections did make her shed “a tear or two,” but without those rejections, she never would have met bandmates Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, and Lady A would have never been formed.

Could you imagine a world where the songs “Need You Know” or “American Honey” didn’t exist?!

With Lady A, Hilary has won seven Grammy Awards, 14 ACM Awards, six CMA Awards, and more. In 2015, Scott and her family formed a group called Hillary Scott & the Scott Family and they released an album, Love Remains. They won two Grammys for Best Contemporary Christian Album and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.

It’s clear that the rejections from American Idol were the best things to happen to these singers! These six artists are proof that there isn’t only one path to achieving your dreams.
