Alan Jackson has released a new version of “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” on the 25th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11.
In the aftermath of the history-altering tragedy on September 11th, 2001, many Americans turned to music as a source of comfort and connection. 2,977 lives were lost, and countless others changed forever. Americans joined hands in grief and showed more unity than the nation had seen in decades.
One of the most impactful songs of that time was Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning),” which he debuted less than two months after the tragedy, at the CMA Awards on November 7, 2001. He was the sole songwriter of the poignant ballad, which asks listeners to remember where they were on that fateful day.
“Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” spent five weeks atop the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and won multiple awards at the ACMs and CMAs. Additionally, it won Jackson his first Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
Alan Jackson Shares Live Recording From Historic Final Show
On September 11th, 2026, exactly 25 years after the Twin Towers fell, Alan Jackson released a new live version of “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning).” The rendition was recorded live at his historic final show at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium on June 27th, 2026.
After revealing his diagnosis with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease in 2021, the “Chattahoochee” singer continued to tour as long as he was physically able. His multi-year Last Call: One More for the Road farewell tour concluded in May 2025.
After, he announced that his performing career would officially come to a close with a star-studded finale in Nashville. Fellow country artists from George Strait to Miranda Lambert performed in Jackson’s honor, and the country icon sang nearly two hours’ worth of his classic hits.
One of the most powerful moments of the night was when Alan Jackson performed “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” and 70,000 voices filled the stadium. Now, that performance has been turned into a live recording for all fans to enjoy.
