Dave Loggins was known for being the only unsigned artist to win a CMA Award for “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do,” his 1986 duet with Anne Murray.
He came to Music City in 1970 with a guitar and a notebook of original songs. Two years later, he released his debut album, Personal Belongings.
Although the album wasn’t a huge success, the band Three Dog Night recorded a cover of one of the songs on the album, “Pieces of April.”
He released his follow up album two years later, titled Apprentice (In A Musical Workshop). That album included “Please Come Back to Boston,” which became a Top 5 hit on the pop chart.
Loggins, whose second cousin is “Footloose” singer Kenny Loggins, became a hit songwriter.
He had chart-topping hits recorded by Alabama, Don Williams, Restless Heart, Reba McEntire, Gary Morris and Wynonna Judd. Among his many accolades are 25 ASCAP Awards.
His song “Augusta” has been used as the theme song from the Masters Golf Tournament.
Other artists who have recorded his songs are Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Toby Keith, Lee greenwood, Smoky Robinson, Ray Charles, Tanya Tucker, Kenny Rogers, and Willie Nelson.
He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1995.
According to his bio on the Nashville Songwriters Foundation website, his career highlights include “touring England in the early ’70s with the Everly Brothers, meeting John Lennon at the Grammys in ’75, and writing six #1 records and not winning songwriter of the year, and then having seven the next year to win.”
He is survived by his sons Quinn, Kyle, and Dylan, and his grandson Braxton Loggins. Dave requested that there be no funeral and donations be made to Alive Hospice instead of sending flowers.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.
