Billy Bob Thornton is clearing the air about concerns over his character’s future in Landman.

If you’ve been a regular watcher of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, you know the series has already packed in plenty of major twists and turns in its first two seasons.

One of the biggest moments was the shocking death of Monty Miller (played by Jon Hamm) in season 1. Monty was a main character, so when he died from a heart attack, fans were completely blindsided.

This had a lot of viewers upset because they wanted to see Monty’s storyline progress. However, Jon Hamm later clarified that although it seemed to come out of nowhere, his character’s death was always planned.

In a January 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Hamm explained why his character was suddenly killed off. Apparently, his role in the show was just a one-season commitment.

“My other commitments don’t really allow me to be a series regular on another show,” he said. “I’m very happy that they asked me to do this.”

Still, it shows that Sheridan isn’t afraid to write out beloved characters all for the sake of a good shock factor.

Because of that, fans are worried that Thornton’s character, Tommy, could end up with a similar fate to Monty’s in season 3.

Landman wrapped up its season 2 earlier this year, and it’s already been confirmed that the hit series will be returning for a third season.

For now, though, no official release date has been announced, and fans are left curious about what could happen next.

If you haven’t watched the show yet and plan to, we’ll avoid any major spoilers. But if you did see the finale, then you know Tommy appeared to be heading into a promising new chapter after opening his own business.

With Tommy seemingly on top of the world right now, some fans are worried it could be setting the stage for everything to come crashing down. However, Thornton is reassuring everyone that Tommy’s fate isn’t doomed.

Over the weekend, Thornton attended the Newport Beach TV Fest sponsored by Visit Newport Beach, and while he was there, he talked to US Weekly about whether he thinks his character could be killed off the show.

“I think [creator] Taylor [Sheridan] is going to let me hang around,” he said.

Although you can never be so sure what Sheridan has in mind. Even the stars of the show are surprised by his decisions.

Ali Larter, who plays Angela Norris, and Andy Garcia, who plays Gallino, told the outlet that they have no clue what could be in store for season 3.

“I really can’t even assume or try to guess what Taylor is going to imagine for season 3,” said Larter. “One thing I know is that to be able to get this far into our story lines, we all know each other. So the characters really understand what their dynamics are.”

And Andy completely agrees that Sheridan will do what’s best for the series.

“I’m in Taylor’s hands. I’m in it to win it,” he said. “So, whatever he wants or has plans for me, I’m ready to execute,” he said. “It all starts from the writing. He’s the writer — and he’s the storyteller — and I think he writes all the characters in a very specific way. They are very well rounded and the stories are intertwined in a way that’s very engaging and he has a flair for the dramatic.”

He continued, “He also [has] an understanding of humanity and empathy and he has an insight into relationships that are very keen. Whether it’s husband and wife, or father and daughter, or father and son, or in case maybe a businessman. It’s a privilege. When you have great writing, it’s always a privilege.”
