Loretta Lynn continues to make history with her latest album, Full Circle. After its release on March 4, Full Circle became Lynn's highest-charting album of all time when it debuted at the 19th spot on the Billboard albums chart.
Full Circle contains some updated versions of Lynn's classic songs, along with brand new pieces written specifically for the album. One such song is called "Lay Me Down," which is truly unique in the fact that Willie Nelson sings it with Lynn as a duet.
Although Lynn and Nelson have been friends for years, "Lay Me Down" marks the first time the two country legends have ever recorded a song together. Despite never working together before, Lynn told Exclaim that the two of them nailed the song on their first take:
"Willie looked at me and said, 'I guess you know we're going to have to go around the world with this and tour?' and I said, 'Willie, I ain't goin'!
Lynn heaped praise on her duet partner, and talked about what makes Nelson the iconic singer he is. "Willie's a great writer and a great artist: you can't miss who he is when he starts singing," she said. "That's what makes an artist."
On Wednesday (Mar. 23), Lynn debuted "Lay Me Down" through a music video with Nelson. The song, like many on Full Circle, addresses the topic of mortality, and how the narrators will finally find peace "when they lay me down."
The music video for the song is simple, yet powerful, as it shows Lynn sitting in her dressing room while Nelson stands out on a stage. Finally, the two of them come together on stage, and can't stop smiling at one another as they sing. At the end of the song, the two friends share an embrace, and in that one embrace rests such a large part of country music's history.

We sure hope that these two will consider recording more songs together in the future!
