At country artist Cody Johnson‘s concerts, his rendition of the song “Travelin’ Soldier” is often a highlight.
During a recent show on his Cody Johnson Live ’26 tour, the song took on a new meaning as a member of the Armed Forces watched the concert live thanks to his wife’s phone.
This was something that CoJo acknowledged, with the artist honoring the real-life travelin’ soldier in a special way.

Cody Johnson Honors A Real-Life Travelin’ Soldier Watching Concert On Wife’s Phone
On Aug. 22, Cody Johnson performed at the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee.
There, he sang his hit rendition of “Travelin’ Soldier,” which has been a staple of his shows since he uploaded a video of himself performing the song on acoustic guitar in 2022.
Since then, that video has garnered over 70 million views, and its success compelled him to officially record the song in 2025.
Originally written and recorded by country artist Bruce Robison in 1996, “Travelin’ Soldier” was popularized by The Dixie Chicks in 2001 and 2002 at the dawn of the War on Terror after the 9/11 attacks 25 years ago.
Using vivid language, the song tells a familiar story in a subtle way, and that’s part of what has made it resonate with listeners over the years.
At CoJo’s show in Knoxville on Aug. 22, the song resonated with the wife of a soldier whose husband was not able to be with her in person at the concert.
However, while he couldn’t be there physically, he was able to watch the concert through his wife’s phone on the front row.
Captured on video, this was something CoJo took a moment to honor as he performed “Travelin’ Soldier.”
At first, it was merely a gesture, but the country artist then stepped toward the woman holding the phone, and he removed his hat in reverence before resuming his performance of the song.
“Thank you,” Cody Johnson could be seen saying to the soldier on the phone.
Responding to the uploaded video of this moment on TikTok, Cody Johnson’s pedal steel guitarist, Harrison Yount, wrote that this was the first time that an audience member at one of their shows had a member of the Armed Forces watching the concert live from a phone.
“Definitely a cool and memorable moment,” Yount added. “We were talking about it after the show.”
Replying to Yount, the video’s uploader noted that she had spoken to the woman holding up the phone, recalling, “He was supposed to be there, but his date kept getting pushed back.”
Some artists may not have responded as CoJo did, but his respect and love for the Armed Forces was on full-display that night.
