Cody Johnson is looking out for his fans as online scams continue to become more common.

The country singer shared a statement on social media on Wednesday morning, October 7, reminding his followers to stay alert and make sure any information they see about him comes directly from him or his team.

Johnson’s warning comes as more people fall for fake news and online scams, especially as AI makes it easier for scammers to fool fans.

“With today’s internet and “AI” it is almost impossible to tell the difference between the truth and fiction,” Johnson’s statement began.

“Fake images, news articles, show announcements and so much more are falsely being shared that are completely inaccurate. Our team is working tirelessly to try and remove the problems. However, at this rate it’s hard to control the sheer volume of misinformation that is being spread.”

It may sound ridiculous to some people, and many might think they’d never fall for a scam, but it happens more often than you’d think.

Stories about people losing large amounts of money to online scammers pop up all the time, and Johnson isn’t the only country star dealing with the problem. Several other singers have also had people pretend to be them.

Recently, a California woman reportedly lost $300,000 after being tricked by someone pretending to be Kenny Chesney. In another case, someone lost $350,000 to a fake Vince Gill.

Other artists who have warned fans about scammers using their names include Toby Keith’s team, Miranda Lambert, Brooks & Dunn, and many more.

“If you see something with Cody’s name, logo, or face on it that doesn’t come straight from his verified accounts… please don’t fall for it,” Johnson’s statement continued.

“We love all of you and appreciate the love and support you’ve given us through the years. Long live country music.”

How To Protect Yourself From Online Scammers Using Cody Johnson’s Name

If you ever come across a post and aren’t sure if it’s real, or someone reaches out claiming to be the actual celebrity, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

  • Always check to see if the account is verified. If there isn’t a verification badge on the profile (a blue check mark), then it’s probably not the real person.

NOTE: It’s also a good idea to check the follower count. If the account has very few followers, it’s likely a fake profile created to impersonate them.

  • Never share private information like your passwords or bank details. Also be careful if someone claiming to be a celebrity asks you for money or donations directly. That’s a major red flag.
