Donald Trump Clashes With Colombian President Over Two Flights Of Colombian Migrants
Donald Trump, who was inaugurated on January 20, has begun his presidency by actively fulfilling his campaign promises. Especially his commitment to deport illegal immigrants from the United States and to tackle border issues.
This was evident in a skirmish that occurred over the weekend between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and President Trump.
On Sunday, Two Planes Carrying Colombian Migrants Were Denied Landing In Colombia
President Petro stated that he refused to allow the deported migrants to land because they were on U.S. military aircraft and treated as “criminals.”
Petro said, “A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves. That’s why I turned back the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.” He continued on to say. “We will receive our fellow citizens on civilian planes without treating them like criminals.”
In response to Petro’s refusal to accept Colombian immigrants, Trump announced on social media that his administration would impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Colombia. If his demands were not met within one week, the tariff would increase to 50%.
Additionally, he announced a travel ban and immediate visa revocations for Colombian government officials and their allies.

In response to Trump’s stipulations, Gustavo Petro stated on social media that he would also implement a 50% tariff on U.S. goods. In the same post, he responded to Trump’s travel ban by saying,
“Trump, I don’t really like traveling to the US, It’s a bit boring.”
However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X late Sunday evening, January 26, that:
“The Government of Columbia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, Including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Columbia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”
Leavitt continued by saying, “Today’s events make clear to the world that America is respected again. President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty, and he expects all other nations of the world to fully cooperate in accepting the deportation of their citizens illegally present in the United States.”
