The Story Behind “Hard Fought Hallelujah”
Jelly Roll just joined contemporary Christian artist Brandon Lake for a chill-inducing new rendition of Lake’s song, “Hard Fought Hallelujah.”
Lake originally released “Hard Fought Hallelujah” as a single in November 2024. The track took off immediately, debuting at #1 on the Digital Songs and Hot Christian Songs charts. It also debuted at the 51st spot on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.
These numbers made “Hard Fought Hallelujah” one of the highest-debuting Christian songs of 2024. In just a few months, the song has already generated millions of streams on Spotify, and its official music video has over seven million views.
In the song, Lake sings about the many trials and tribulations he’s been through in life. While these trials have sometimes tested or weakened his faith, he finds it growing stronger as he fights hard for his personal “hallelujah.”
As some of the lyrics go:
“And I’ll bring my storm-tossed, torn-sail
Story-to-tell hallelujah.
‘Cause God, You’ve been patient,
God, You’ve been gracious,
Faithful, whatever I’m feeling or facing.
So I’ll bring my hard-fought, heartfelt, it-is-well hallelujah.”
Lake co-wrote “Hard Fought Hallelujah” with Steven Furtick, Benjamin Hastings, and Chris Brown. During an interview with Jesus Freak Hideout, Lake said:
“This song is about the battles we face, the grit throughout the fight for faith, and the praise that comes after. I hope it resonates deeply with everyone.”
