The country music community was left in a state of shock when a statement posted to John Anderson‘s social media pages on October 21 announced his death at the age of 71.

The statement read in part, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend…We are completely heartbroken.”

Anderson’s loved ones did not share his cause of death. However, his team told The Tennessean he passed away at home on October 21.

The news of Anderson’s death was hard for his fellow artists to process, especially since he attended a major industry event just three days prior.

On October 18, the “Seminole Wind” singer was on hand to help welcome the newest inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Those inductees were Paul Overstreet, The Stanley Brothers (posthumously inducted), and Tim McGraw.

Anderson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame himself in 2024, was photographed with several of the attendees. He posed for a picture with new inductee Tim McGraw, who was “completely shook” when he learned of Anderson’s death.

“He was in such good spirits,” McGraw said about Anderson’s demeanor at the CMHOF ceremony.

McGraw added, “We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off. I am completely heartbroken by his passing.”

Nancy Jones & Blake Shelton Remember John Anderson After Seeing Him 3 Days Before He Died

Nancy Jones, the widow of George Jones, also stopped to take a picture with John Anderson (and Tim McGraw) at the CMHOF Medallion Ceremony on October 18.

After Anderson died, a post was shared on George Jones’ page that read:

“This photo was taken Sunday at the Country Music Hall of Fame ceremony with Tim McGraw, Nancy Jones, and John Anderson as they shared old stories, cherished memories, and plenty of laughs about the good ole days.”

The caption continued to read, “It’s hard to believe we lost John today. Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.”

Blake Shelton attended the same ceremony on October 18 to perform a tribute to songwriter Paul Overstreet. He also cherished the chance to catch up with Anderson, his close friend.

Little did he know that would be the last time he’d see the man he called his “hero.” After Anderson died, Shelton shared a heart-wrenching tribute on social media.

In it, Shelton revealed one of the last things he ever told Anderson, writing:

“I got to see him last Sunday and I don’t even know why but I told him I loved him. That is what fills my heart in this moment. My love and prayers go out to John’s family. This one really hurts.”
