Singer, actress, and activist Olivia Newton-John passed away on August 8, 2022 at the age of 73 following a years-long battle with cancer. Her death was mourned by the many friends she made in the entertainment industry, including her Grease co-star, John Travolta.

Travolta, who played Danny next to Newton-John’s Sandy, shared an emotional tribute to her after her passing. He said:

“My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!
Your Danny, your John!”

Newton-John was honored in the “In Memoriam” segment during the 2023 Academy Awards on Sunday (March 12). Other stars honored in the tribute included James Caan, Kirstie Alley, Angela Lansbury, and Ray Liotta.

Travolta took to the stage to introduce the segment. He referenced the song “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” which was the famous solo Newton-John performed in Grease.

Clearly emotional, Travolta said, “Each of [the people honored in the tribute] left an individual and indelible mark that and shared and informed us.”

Travolta started breaking down and cried as he continued. “They’ve touched our hearts, they’ve made us smile, and became dear friends, who we will always remain hopelessly devoted to,” he said.
