Charles Ingalls is one of the most beloved figures in literary and television history. He was also a real person, and the father of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Laura authored the Little House book series based on her childhood experiences on the frontier. That book series later inspired the Little House on the Prairie TV show, which ran from 1974 to 1983.

The series starred Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls (AKA “Pa”) and Melissa Gilbert as Laura. Landon also served as an executive producer on the series.

Fans adored Landon’s portrayal of Pa and the Little House show as a whole. So when Netflix announced it was creating a new Little House adaptation, people questioned whether the new series and its actors would capture the same “magic.”

Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie series debuted on July 9th. All eight episodes of the first season were released at once, giving fans the chance to fully know the characters and the actors who portray them.

Alice Halsey plays Laura, while Skywalker Hughes portrays her older sister, Mary. Crosby Fitzgerald was cast as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls, with Luke Bracey being cast as Charles “Pa” Ingalls.

It didn’t take long for Bracey and the rest of the cast to win over Little House fans. Their performances have been fairly well-received, and the series generated 6.4 million views in just 4 days.

So who is Luke Bracey, and where have you seen him before? Read on to learn more about the handsome actor now playing Charles Ingalls.

Meet Little House On The Prairie Actor Luke Bracey & Learn Where You’ve Seen Him Before

Luke Bracey was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on April 26, 1989. That’s right, the actor who plays Charles Ingalls isn’t American!

The real-life Charles was born in Cuba, New York, and grew up in Illinois. So naturally, Bracey uses an American accent on Little House on the Prairie. You may be surprised by the sound of his actual speaking voice!

Bracey began acting in 2009, playing Trey Palmer on the soap opera Far and Away. Then he played Aaron in three episodes of the TV series Dance Academy.

He landed his first film role in 2011, playing Riley in Monte Carlo. He primarily shifted to acting in movies for a while after that, landing roles in The November Man, Point Break, Hacksaw Ridge, and Interceptor, among other projects. He also appeared in three episodes of the hit miniseries Little Fires Everywhere.

One of Bracey’s breakthrough moments came in 2022. That’s the year he portrayed Jerry Schilling, a member of Elvis Presley‘s “Memphis Mafia,” in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic.

After Elvis, Bracey starred in the movies Maybe I Do, One True Loves, Mercy Road, and The Travellers. In 2026, he joined the main cast of the Australian series The Artful Dodger, in which he portrays Inspector Henry Boxer.

Then, of course, Bracey also joined the cast of Little House on the Prairie, helping introduce Charles Ingalls to a whole new generation.

Luke Bracey Shares His Approach To Playing Charles Ingalls

You’d think anyone stepping into Charles Ingalls’ shoes would feel some pressure, knowing how revered Michael Landon was for his performance. But Luke Bracey didn’t find himself in that boat because he didn’t realize just how “big” the character is in American culture.

“When I auditioned for Charles, I was really unaware of what I was auditioning for. I had no concept of Little House on the Prairie,” Bracey told PEOPLE.

He added, “[I] was able to come into this role, in this show, fresh. I didn’t have any preconceived notions of who he was or what the story was.”

Bracey expressed similar sentiments during an interview with USA Today. He said he considered himself “lucky” not to be burdened by any preconceived notions about Charles Ingalls or Landon’s performance in the original series.

He said his approach to playing Charles was to portray him as “a human being.”

“He’s a guy, he’s a real person, who was a good man, who made mistakes, who learned things, who got better, but also wasn’t perfect,” Brcey said. “He wants to be a good man, he wants to be a good husband, he wants to be a good father…That was where I wanted to go with Pa, I wanted him to be real, and not this caricature of an amazing man.”

Landon achieved major heartthrob status, with many viewers tuning in to Little House just to admire him. What does Bracey think about potentially being regarded in the same way now that he’s playing Pa?

“I think…the show has many more facets to it. I hope!” he said with a laugh during an interview with TVInsider.

Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie series has already been renewed for a second season, although a premiere date has not been announced. Stay tuned!
