About “Take Me Home, Country Roads”

“Take Me Home, Country Roads” is a timeless country song with so much history behind it.

Written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was released in 1971 and appeared on Denver’s album Poems, Prayers and Promises.

Although Denver was mainly known as a folk singer, the song helped him gain recognition in the country genre and became one of his signature hits.

After its initial release, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. However, it had a slower climb on the country charts, only reaching No. 50 at the time.

Despite this, the song went on to become one of the most iconic country songs in history. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 and was certified Platinum in 2017.

The legendary lyrics of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” have also made it an official anthem of the state of West Virginia. With Oliver Anthony being a Virginia native himself, it’s only fitting that he chose to release his own cover of the song.

“Country roads, take me home / To the place I belong / West Virginia, mountain mama / Take me home, country roads”
